Sérgio Paulo Rouanet

Sérgio Paulo Rouanet (born February 23, 1934 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian diplomat, philosopher, anthropologist, translator and writer.

Sérgio Paulo Rouanet studied law and earned degrees in economics, philosophy and political science. He received his PhD in Political Science from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). From 1991 to 1992 he was Minister of Culture of Brazil.

He is married to the social scientist Bárbara Freitag and is the father of the philosopher Luís Paulo Rouanet .

Rouanet has translated the work of the philosopher Walter Benjamin into Portuguese. In 2004 he received the Goethe Medal for this, among other things . From 1992 to 1996, Rouanet was the Brazilian consul general in Berlin. In 1995, Rouanet founded the Brazilian-German cultural institute “Instituto Cultural Brasileiro na Alemanha” (ICBRA) in Berlin. He is a member of the honorary committee of the Friends of the Ibero-American Institute eV
