Berthold Kuhn

Berthold Kuhn (born November 21, 1965 in Heidelberg ) is a German political scientist .

Life

Kuhn received his diploma from the Free University of Berlin in 1992, after which he completed a postgraduate course at the German Institute for Development Policy . After receiving his doctorate in Leipzig in 1997, he worked as a project manager in Bangladesh . In 1999 Kuhn founded the InnovateCo, the consulting activities u. a. for the European Commission , World Bank and GTZ . In 2004 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin.

From 2005 to 2007 he was visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Since 2009 he has been a private lecturer at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University. In December 2011 he took up a two-year German-Chinese professorship for social governance and environmental participation at the School of Public Affairs at Xiamen University , which is co-financed by the German Society for International Cooperation and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . There he worked with network partners from China and Germany on participation and governance in the area of ​​climate change, with a particular focus on innovations and the role of non-governmental organizations. With the University Alliance for Sustainability, he has carried out several research stays on the topic of sustainable development in a global context since 2016 and specifically contributed to intensifying the exchange between the Free University of Berlin and Peking University.

Berthold Kuhn is married to Yu Miao and has three children. He currently lives with his family mainly in Berlin.

Research and advice

Kuhn deals with sustainable development in a global context, with development policy and the role of civil society organizations in international cooperation. From 2019 he also dealt specifically with future trends in international cooperation, including: a. with innovative climate policy in international comparison and with the topic of "sustainable finance" (sustainable investments).

His writings convey an understanding of the complementary interplay between state, private and civil society actors. His work has found importance in international cooperation because he shows how the interaction of different actors and instruments can be designed to achieve sustainable success and initiate transformation processes.

Kuhn has published several research papers on discourses, policy-making and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (sustainable development goals of the United Nations) and has conducted seminars at universities in Germany and China and given lectures at international conferences.

Kuhn has advised numerous organizations involved in bilateral and multilateral international cooperation and carried out evaluations. a. for the European Commission, the Society for International Cooperation, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), think tanks, political foundations and non-governmental organizations.
