The German Development Institute gGmbH (DIE) is a think tank on issues of global development and international development policy based in Bonn .
Conception and objectives
The organization relies on cooperation in high-performance research networks with partner institutes in all regions of the world. The DIE has relied on the interplay of research , advice and training since it was founded . On the basis of independent research, DIE advises the federal government and other public institutions in Germany , the European Commission , international organizations and governments in developing countries on current issues relating to cooperation between industrialized and developing countries.
As part of the nine-month postgraduate program, the organization prepares German and European university graduates for demanding tasks in development cooperation and aims to qualify future top performers. The approximately 900 DIE alumni form a global network that makes it easier for the institute to anchor its research results and advisory services in German, European and worldwide development policy networks.
Since 2007 the organization has been training highly qualified managers from the eight anchor countries Egypt , Brazil , China , India , Indonesia , Mexico , Pakistan and South Africa at the Global Governance School . Thanks to their growing economic and political importance, these countries play an increasingly important role in their region as well as in shaping globalization politically .
Around 100 employees work in the organization, around two thirds of them on the scientific staff. The institute was headed from 2003 to 2018 by Dirk Messner (Director).
