Dirk Messner

Dirk Messner (born April 23, 1962 ) is a German political scientist . He has been President of the Federal Environment Agency since January 2020 .

Life and research

Dirk Messner studied political science and economics at the Free University of Berlin and Sogang University in Seoul from 1982 to 1988 . From 1989 he worked at the German Development Institute with a focus on Latin America and received his doctorate in 1995 from the Free University of Berlin . In 2002 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with the thesis Challenges of Globalization in Latin America . His work focuses on development research and policy , global governance , international policy on climate change and international competitiveness.

From 1995 to 2003 he was scientific director of the Institute for Development and Peace in Duisburg. From 2003 to 2018 he was director of the German Development Institute in Bonn.

Messner has been an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2006 . From 1995 to 2003 he was a private lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Free University of Berlin, and in 2003 he was Professor of Political Science at the University of Munich.

Dirk Messner was a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) from 2004 to 2019 , from 2009 as deputy chairman, from 2013 as co-chairman.

Since 2011 he has also been co-director of the Käte-Hamburger- Kolleg / Center for Global Cooperation Research in Duisburg. Together with Gesine Schwan, he is chairman of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Germany.

From late 2018 until the end of 2019 he was director of the Institute for Environment and Human Security at the United Nations University (United Nations University, UNU) in Bonn and Vice-Rector of UNU.
