Irena Veisaitė
Irena Veisaitė (born January 9, 1928 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian theater scholar.
Life
During the National Socialist era , Veisaitė was imprisoned in the Kaunas ghetto . In 1953 she completed her diploma in German studies at Lomonossow University in Moscow . 1963 doctorate them at the State University in Leningrad on the late poetry of Heinrich Heine and was from 1953 to 1997 lecturer at the Pedagogical University in Vilnius . In 2012 she was awarded the Goethe Medal for her services to cultural exchange between Germany and her home country . Veisaite is the representative of the Soros Foundation in Vilnius and was chairman of the board of trustees of the Thomas Mann cultural center in Nida . On June 23, 2020 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in a solemn ceremony by Ambassador Matthias Sonn on behalf of the Federal President .
She is a survivor of the Holocaust and has been committed to reconciliation and understanding throughout her life.
