Matthias Sonn

Matthias Peter Sonn (born June 29, 1957 in Hamburg ) is a German diplomat and has been Ambassador to Lithuania since August 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Sonn completed a degree in law and theology at the University of Geneva , the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and the University of Hamburg .

In 1984 he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his training as an attaché, was employed as first secretary at the embassy in Trinidad and Tobago . After a temporary assignment at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn , he was Counselor and Permanent Representative of the Ambassador in Ghana . After a further assignment in the Foreign Office, he was initially head of the legal and consular department and then head of the political and press department of the embassy in Turkey .

In 1998, Sonn became head of a work unit for the Eastern Mediterranean in the Political Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin . At the beginning of the 2000s, he held the title of Senior Deputy High Representative as the Deputy High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and was thus responsible for the implementation of the Dayton Agreement .

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Sonn became counselor at the embassy in Russia , where he was responsible for coordinating political and security issues. He then became head of the special staff for international counter-terrorism cooperation in the Federal Foreign Office.

After Sonn was envoy and head of the economic department at the embassy in the USA between 2008 and 2011 , he became envoy at the embassy in Australia in 2011 .

In July 2013, Sonn became Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Guatemala and as such received accreditation as Ambassador to Belize. In July 2016, Sonn took on the role of German ambassador to Bolivia , replacing Peter Linder .

In August 2019, Sonn moved to the post of German ambassador to Lithuania .
