Naum Kleiman (2010)

Naum Ichiljewitsch Kleiman ( Russian: Нау́м Ихи́льевич Кле́йман ; born December 1, 1937 in Chișinău , Bessarabia , now the Republic of Moldova ) is a Russian film historian , publicist and curator . Kleiman was a co-founder and, from 1967 to 1985, head of the Sergei Eisenstein Archive. Until the summer of 2014, Kleiman headed the Moscow Film Museum, which he co-founded in 1989.

Kleiman is considered one of the "most important advocates of film culture in Russia today".

At the Berlinale 2015 he was honored with the Berlinale Camera .

Career

Kleiman studied film history in Moscow from 1961 and developed into an expert for the Russian director Sergei Eisenstein . He built up the Sergei Eistenstein Archive, which he eventually headed from 1967 to 1985. Kleiman has published numerous publications on Eisenstein's work, including the film documentary "House of the Master".

In 1989 Kleiman founded the Musej Kino cinemathek in Moscow , and from 1992 took over its management. In the years after the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Musej Kino mainly supported young filmmakers in their professional development and thus contributed to the further development of Russian cinema. Today the Moscow Film Museum's collection comprises around 150,000 objects. Before Kleiman was deposed as its head in 2014, it showed up to 500 films a year.

Since the Moscow Film Museum lost its building as a result of a real estate scandal in 2005, Kleiman and his employees have been actively campaigning for a new location to house the collection. At the same time, they showed film screenings almost daily in various Moscow museums and cinemas, thus keeping the "Cinematheque in Exile" alive.

In the summer of 2014, the Russian Minister of Culture, Vladimir Medinsky, deposed Kleiman as director of the Film Museum and appointed the film journalist Larissa Solonicina in his place. Kleiman's employees then collectively resigned as a protest at this action.

In 1993 Kleiman was a member of the Berlinale competition jury and also a long-time advisor to the Forum section . As a thank you for his services, he was presented with the Berlinale Camera on February 12, 2015 .
