Şara Sayın

Şara Sayın (born June 6, 1926 in Istanbul ; † before or on August 15, 2017 ) was a Turkish university professor , literary scholar , Germanist and Turkologist .

biography

After attending the Namik Kemal School (Namık Kemal İlkokulu) in Istanbul from 1934 to 1936, she obtained her Abitur at the local German secondary school in 1944 . She then studied German and Turkish studies at the University of Istanbul and graduated in 1948 with the state examination.

In 1951, she was Assistant Professor at the Department of German language and German literature of the Philosophical Faculty of Istanbul University, where in 1953 her doctorate for Dr. phil. with a dissertation on "Investigations into the tragic process in the Grillparzers drama " took place.

In 1958 she completed her habilitation with a habilitation thesis on "' The Ring ' by Heinrich Wittenwiler : A late medieval comic - didactic epic ".

In 1967 she was appointed professor at the Chair for German Language and Literature at the Philosophical Faculty of Istanbul University. She held this professorship until her retirement in 1993. One focus of her work was on the subject of “The Revolutionary in Büchner's Dramas”. In addition, she dealt with the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Franz Kafka .

In 1972 she was entrusted with the establishment of the German as a Foreign Language Department at the University of Istanbul Foreign Language School and from 1972 to 1973 she was initially head of the department and later the department of German as a Foreign Language. Between 1988 and 1991 she was also head of the German Language and Literature Department and head of the Western Language and Literature Department.

In 1992 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class , for her services to the German language and literature .

In 2000 Sayın received the Goethe Medal ; In 2010 she was awarded the Friedrich Gundolf Prize , endowed with 12,500 euros, by the German Academy for Language and Poetry for imparting German culture abroad .
