Viktor Žmegač

Viktor Žmegač (born March 21, 1929 in Slatina , Slavonia ) is a philologist and literary historian . Among other things, he wrote treatises on Rilke , Brecht , Goethe , Schiller and Kafka . Žmegač received the Friedrich Gundolf Prize in 1987 and the Herder Prize in 1993 . He is a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . Žmegač is the leading representative of the Zagreb School , a line of thought and research that ties in with the formal sociology of literature of the early Georg Lukács . He is one of the three "companions of many decades" to whom Dieter Borchmeyer wrote his book Was ist Deutsch? A nation's search for itself is devoted "in gratitude and friendship".

Viktor Žmegač was born in Slatina, where he attended elementary school. Love for literature came from his mother, and love for music from his grandma. He went to high school in Virovitica and Osijek. He studied German and musicology in Zagreb and Göttingen. He received his doctorate in 1959. He lectured at universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. From 1971 until retirement in 1999, he taught German literature at the Department of German Studies at the Philosophical Faculty in Zagreb. He has been an emeritus since 2002.
