Marilyn Douala Bell (* 1957 in Cameroon ) is a Cameroonian-French social economist and president of the cultural organization doual'art .

Life

Marilyn Douala Bell was born in 1957 in Douala, Cameroon as the daughter of René Douala Manga Bell and Delphine Bonny M'Bedy Emboumbou. Her father (1927–2012) became king of the Douala people in 1966, succeeding his uncle Alexander Douala-Bell . She studied development economics in Paris and graduated with an MD . In Paris she met her husband, from the Alsace -derived art historian Didier Schaub know. After their marriage in 1986, they returned to their hometown of Douala. She bears the title Princess in her country of origin .

Career

From 1988 to 1993 she was a delegate and manager responsible for Central Africa of the Association pour la Promotion des Initiatives Communautaires Africaines (APICA), a pan - African non - governmental organization based in Douala. From 1990 to 1991 she documented and analyzed business relationships between the population, founders and state actors in the field of urban development in cooperation between APICA, the French volunteer society ( Association Française de Volontaire du Progrès ) and the NGO Groupe de Recherches et d'Echanges Technologiques .

Since 1994 she has worked as an internationally recognized expert on urban and rural development with the Swiss DDC , the World Bank , the European Commission and the German Society for International Cooperation . Since 2000 she has been responsible for the decentralized coordination of participatory urban development policy in Alsace.

In 1991, Douala Bell co-founded the cultural organization and contemporary art center doual'art . In 2007 she and Didier Schaub initiated the Salon Urbain de Douala as an art triennial . She supported numerous conferences in cooperation with independent cultural organizations such as the Kenya Workshop , which was organized by the Mondriaan Foundation, and the Curating in Africa Symposium at the Tate Modern in London .

Awards

  • 2021: Goethe Medal for coming to terms with German colonial history in Cameroon and consolidating one's own Cameroonian identity
