Wolfgang Kubin (Chinese: 顾 彬; pinyin: Gù Bīn; born December 17, 1945 in Celle ) is a German poet , essayist , sinologist , university professor and literary translator. He is one of the most respected sinologists in Europe.

Studies and teaching

Wolfgang Kubin passed his Abitur at the Dionysianum high school in Rheine in 1966 . His studies included Protestant theology ( Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster from 1966 to 1968), Japanese Studies and Chinese ( University of Vienna 1968) as well as Sinology , Philosophy , German and again Japanese Studies ( Ruhr University Bochum from 1969 to 1973).

With the work " The lyrical work of Tu Mu (803–852), attempt at an interpretation ", Kubin was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He conducted his first foreign studies in the high-level Chinese language from 1974 to 1975 at what was then the language institute in Beijing . In 1976 he became the father of a daughter, the future actress Anna Kubin .

Kubin received his first assistant position in 1977 at the East Asian Seminar of the Free University of Berlin . There he taught Chinese literature and art in the 20th century and in 1981 submitted his habilitation thesis on the development of the view of nature in classical Chinese literature.

From 1985 Kubin represented the subject Chinese at the seminar for oriental languages ​​at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ; since 1995 he has been a professor of sinology there, and has now retired.

He achieved fame beyond the borders of Sinology as a translator of modern Chinese prose and poetry. His best-known work is probably the six-volume translation of the stories and essays Lu Xun . His history of Chinese literature in the 20th century is considered a standard work. He also publishes in China under his Chinese name 顧 彬 (gu bìn).

Kubin has been working as Senior Professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University (Beijing) since 2011 and at Shantou University (Shantou, Guangdong) since 2019.

Wolfgang Kubin mainly teaches Chinese and German intellectual history as a sinologist, Germanist and philosopher in the Chinese language.
