Du Mu ( Chinese  杜牧 , Pinyin Dù Mù ) (* 803 Chang'an ; † 852 ) was a poet of the Tang Dynasty . He was influenced by Du Fu , Li Bai , Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan .

Du Mu was born to an increasingly indebted family. He passed the civil service examination in 827 at the age of 25 and subsequently held many public offices. However, he never succeeded in attaining high offices, apparently because he made enemies on a factual issue in 835.

Du Mu studied Shi , Fu and ancient Chinese prose. It is best known for its sensual and lyrical quatrains. In addition, he also wrote long ballads, a commentary on the art of war, and letters with advice to high dignitaries.

Du Mu and Li Shangyin are referred to as the "little Li-Du" (小李 杜), in contrast to the "big Li-Du", Li Bai and Du Fu .
