Karl-Heinz Pohl (Sinologist)

Karl-Heinz Pohl (* 1945 in Saarlouis , Saarland , Germany ) is a German sinologist and emeritus professor of sinology at the University of Trier .

Life

After graduating from the Stadtgarten-Gymnasium in Saarlouis in 1966, he began studying Sinology, Japanese Studies and Art History at the Universities of Hamburg, Bonn and Toronto, graduating in 1978. In 1982 he received his doctorate from the University of Toronto. Between 1983 and 1987 Karl-Heinz Pohl was a research assistant (with Hans Steininger ) at the Sinology Department at the University of Würzburg. In 1987 he received a professorship for Chinese literature and intellectual history at the University of Tübingen. In 1992 he moved to the University of Trier, where he worked as a professor of sinology until his retirement in 2010.

His research areas are the Chinese intellectual history, ethics and aesthetics of modern and premodern China, modern and classical Chinese literature as well as intercultural communication and dialogue between China and the West. Since 2002 Pohl has been chairman of the Académie du Midi, an institute for philosophy in Trier.

Pohl's publications mainly concern the poet Tao Yuanming , literature, calligraphy and painting in the Qing dynasty , modern Chinese poetry of the 1980s and Confucianism .
