The Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi is the largest opera house in the northern Italian city of Trieste and the only house in Italy that hosts an annual operetta festival .

Surname

Originally called Teatro Nuovo , the name of the house was changed to Teatro Grande in 1820 and Teatro Comunale in 1861 . In 1901 the opera house was renamed the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi a few days after the death of Giuseppe Verdi .

history

The opera house was built between 1798 and 1801 by the architects Gian Antonio Selva , who had already designed the Venetian Teatro La Fenice , and Matteo Pertsch . When designing the classicist facade of the building, Pertsch was heavily influenced by his teacher Giuseppe Piermarini , who was the master builder of La Scala in Milan . At the opening of the house on April 21, 1801, the opera Ginevra di Scozia by the Bavarian composer Johann Simon Mayr was performed. From this point on, the theater replaced the previous city theater Teatro S. Pietro in the building of what was then the town hall. Another world premiere followed in the opening series of the opera Annibale in Capua by the Viennese court conductor Antonio Salieri , a. a. starring the singers Luigi Marchesi and Giacomo David , who are celebrated all over Europe . In 1848 Verdi's opera Il corsaro was premiered in the opera house , and two years later his work Stiffelio was premiered .

As part of extensive renovation work in 1889, the conversion from oil lamps to electrical lighting took place. In addition, the auditorium was expanded from the original 1,400 seats to 2,000 seats. However, when the house was renovated between 1992 and 1997, the auditorium was reduced to the original number of seats.

The former ballroom is now used for smaller theater performances.

The opera house now has a symphony orchestra , a choir, and a ballet and chamber theater group. In addition to the opera and ballet season, from mid-June to mid-August the house hosts the Festival Internazionale dell'Operetta , the only operetta festival in Italy.
