Ralph Godfrey Kercheval (born December 1, 1911 in Salt Lick , Kentucky , USA , † October 6, 2010 in Lexington , Kentucky) was an American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Brooklyn Dodgers .

Player career

Ralph Kercheval studied at the University of Kentucky for the American football team he played for. From 1931 to 1933 he was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements. Kercheval completed his studies in animal husbandry and after graduating worked at a horse racing stable .

In 1934, Ralph Kercheval signed a professional contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the only player on the team who received a fixed annual salary. His annual salary temporarily amounted to 3,600 US dollars . Kercheval ended his playing career in 1940 without ever having won a title.

After the career

After his playing career, Kercheval served from 1941 to 1945 as a cavalry officer in the US Army . After his service, he worked as a horse breeder and trainer. In 1971 and 1972 he was President of the United States Thoroughbred Horse Breeders Association. Ralph Kercheval is buried in Lexington Cemetery , Lexington.

Honors

Ralph Kercheval was a member of the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame , the Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame, and was twice elected All-Star .
