William Rodney McMullen (* 1960/1961 in Williamstown , Kentucky ) is an American executive who has been the CEO of Kroger since January 1, 2014 .

Life

McMullen was born in Kentucky and raised on his family's farm and was the first of his family to graduate from college. He has a bachelor's degree and master's degree in accounting, both from the University of Kentucky . In 1978 McMullen began working at a local Kroger grocery store while still at university. His job included labeling items, packing food, receiving products, and keeping the register. In 1982 McMullen moved to Charlotte , North Carolina . There he was a financial analyst at company headquarters. At the age of 34, McMullen became Chief Financial Officer. McMullen was instrumental in the merger with Fred Meyer, Inc . involved in 1999. McMullen became vice chairman in 2003 and chief operating officer in 2009 . McMullen was named Kroger CEO on January 1, 2014, succeeding David Dillon .

Since 2001, McMullen has also served on the board of directors of Cincinnati Financial .
