Athlete of the Year (Denmark)
Denmark's Sportsman of the Year ( Danish Årets Sportsnavn ) is an award that has been given annually since 1991 by the Danish Sports Association ( Danmarks Idræts-Forbund , DIF for short) in cooperation with the daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten .
nomination
Denmark's best athlete of the past calendar year is determined, with men, women and teams competing against each other. A prize committee acts as jurors, chaired by the Danish Minister of Education and the DIF President as second chairman. The result is usually announced in early January. The prize is endowed with 50,000 Danish kroner (approx. 6710 euros) and is considered the most important award in Danish sport.
The jury of experts, which includes the publisher and sports editor of Jyllands-Posten , draws up a list of nominees from three athletes or teams and is also responsible for choosing the winner. In addition to the award for Denmark's Sportsman of the Year, other prizes have also been awarded in the past. In 2013, the event included awards for the best Danish football player, the greatest young Olympic player or for Danish disabled sports.
Award winners
The Danish national women's handball team received the most awards (three wins), followed by the two rowers Eskild Ebbesen and Thomas Ebert , the swimmer Mette Jacobsen , the racing driver Tom Kristensen and the tennis player Caroline Wozniacki (two successes each). The most common sport among the winners is swimming (five wins), followed by handball (four) and rowing (three). In 13 out of 26 cases women were named Denmark's Sportsman of the Year. Winter sports enthusiasts have not yet been successful.
