List of individual world champions in speedway
The list of world champions in speedway shows all individual world champions in speedway . The world championship is the most important individual competition for speedway drivers. The first world championships were held in 1936. No world championships were held from 1939 to 1948 due to the Second World War and its aftermath. Since the speedways sport was initially only well known in Great Britain , the first 15 finals of the world championships all took place at Wembley Stadium in London . From the 1960s, cities in Sweden and Poland also came to the venues. Cities in the USA , Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark followed in the early 1980s .
From 1995 the world championship, similar to the Formula 1 world championship , is carried out in the Grand Prix system, with races, so-called Grand Prix, being held at different locations and the drivers receiving points for their respective placements, which are added to the world champion to investigate. Until 1994 the world championships were held in a system similar to the German championship . Qualification runs (quarter-finals, semi-finals) were carried out at various locations in order to determine the finalists.
