Tony Rickardsson (born August 17, 1970 in Avesta ) is a Swedish speedway driver .

Rickardsson is one of the most successful speedway drivers in the world. Together with Ivan Mauger from New Zealand, he holds the record of six individual world championship titles. On August 1, 2006, Rickardsson announced that he would no longer compete due to a concussion he sustained in one race of the year.

Life

Initially, Rickardsson was also interested in ice hockey and played as a team captain in a club in the Dalarna region . When the time required for two sports was no longer manageable, he decided on speedway. Then began a meteoric career. At the age of 20 he was Swedish champion and a year later he won the silver medal at the individual world championships. Rickardsson won his first world title in 1994 at the age of 24. This was followed by five more individual world championships in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2005.

Rickardsson also won several world titles for doubles and teams. Furthermore, he was at the top of the podium at various state championships. He drove for most of his career for the Swedish club Masarna and also for a Polish club.

Awards

For his achievements, Tony Rickardsson received the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal in 1999 and the main prize of the Swedish TV editorial team Radiosporten ( Jerringpris ) in 2005 . Tony Rickardsson has been an honorary citizen of the city of Tarnów in Poland (Eng .: Tarnau) since 2006.
