Erik Gundersen (born October 8, 1959 in Esbjerg ) is a former Danish track athlete . He won three individual speedway world championship titles and two long track world championship titles

Career

Erik Gundersen began his speedway motorsport career in 1979 with the Cradley Heathens of Dudley . With the club team he won the title in the British championship in 1981 and 1983.

In 1981 and from 1983 to 1988 he won the team championship. Between 1985 and 1989 he was a pair world champion. From 1983 to 1986 he was consecutive Danish champion. In 1989 he was able to secure the title in the Danish championship again.

His greatest successes were the three world championship titles in 1984, 1985 and 1988 in the individual classification and the two long track world championships in 1984 and 1986.

Gundersen was involved in an accident in the final of the 1989 Team World Championship in Bradford, England , in which he fell and was seriously injured. He was in a coma for a long time and had to end his motorsport career. After the end of his career he became the coach of the Danish national team. He has been a member of the Danish Sports Hall of Fame since 1996 .
