Speedway Individual World Championship
The Speedway World Championships , also known as Speedway Grand Prix , have been held individually by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) since 1936 . The only German world champion so far was Egon Müller in 1983. Since 1995 the world champion has been determined in a Grand Prix cycle.
mode
Until 1995
Until the new Grand Prix mode was introduced in 1995, the drivers had to qualify for the world championship final using a multi-round qualification system. Several runs, so-called heats , are carried out for 4 drivers per qualification round . The winner of a heat received 3 running points, the second 2 points, the third 1 point and the last of a heat no point. The running points were added up and those with the best points moved into the next qualifying round or the final. It varied from lap to lap and from year to year how many drivers ultimately made it to the next lap.
In 1955 the qualification system was revised in such a way that from now on there were “regional” qualifications. That means, there were separate qualification rounds for z. B. the zones of Scandinavia , Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Great Britain, Australia and the USA carried out, of which the best in each case entered semi-finals or directly into the final.
From 1995
The mode was completely revised for the 1995 season. The previous system was abolished and the Grand Prix system, which is similar to the systems of Formula 1 or MotoGP , was introduced. Events, so-called Grand Prix, are held in various cities. In 1995 there were 6 Grand-Prix in the calendar of events, while in 2009 11 Grand-Prix were held.
After each driver has completed five heats, the best eight drivers carry out the semi-finals, of which the best two move into the final and determine the winner of the Grand Prix. For a Grand Prix there was initially the following Grand Prix point distribution:
- 25 for the winner, 20, 18, 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 9, 8, 7, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the sixteenth.
In 2005 the system was further modified. Now Grand Prix points were not awarded for the place achieved, but the running points (3 for the first of a heat, 2, 1, 0) are now considered Grand Prix points. The points that are achieved in the final of a Grand Prix are doubled so that it is theoretically possible that the Grand Prix winner will ultimately receive fewer points for the overall classification than, for example, B. the runner-up.
16 drivers start at a Grand Prix. 15 drivers are set as permanent drivers for the entire season and take part in every Grand Prix. In addition, there is one wild card driver per Grand Prix , who mostly comes from the host country and receives the wild card from the organizer. Eight of the 15 permanent drivers are determined from the final ranking of the previous season. The first eight will get the fixed starting place for the coming season. Three more are determined via a qualification system. Four quarter-finals will be held, with the best eight drivers in each of the two semi-finals. From the semifinals, the top eight will again move into the final Grand Prix Challenge, which is ultimately about permanent starting positions for the Grand Prix season. The best three of the challenge will get these permanent places. Another four drivers for the permanent starting positions will be determined by the Grand Prix organizers and the FIM.
