Krško ( German Gurkfeld ) [ ˈkrʃkɔ ] is a place with 27,586 inhabitants (2002) and a municipality in Slovenia , in the historical region of Lower Carniola ( Dolenjska ). It lies on the Save , the most water-rich tributary of the Danube .
The place is known, among other things, for the Krško nuclear power plant . It has been feeding electricity into the public grid since January 1983; since the breakup of Yugoslavia , Slovenia and neighboring Croatia have operated it together.
history
The city was very important during the Reformation because the Protestant preachers Adam Bohorič and Jurij Dalmatin lived and worked here.
During the Counter-Reformation , the Capuchin monastery was built in Krško and equipped with a rich library, which we are still proud of today. During the reforms of Joseph II in the 1780s ( Josephinism ), it was not closed as it was used for education.
The town gained industrial fame mainly because of the Vipap Krško paper factory (formerly also cellulose production) .
Partner communities
Krško has been partnered with the Baden-Württemberg community of Obrigheim since 1982 .
