Jurij Dalmatin , also: Georg Dalmatin (* around 1547 in Gurkfeld in Lower Carniola , † August 31, 1589 in Ljubljana ) was a Protestant translator of the Bible into Slovenian .

Life

Jurij Dalmatin, who is said to come from a Dalmatian family, received lessons from Adam Bohorič ( Adam Bohoritsch ) until he was 18 . From 1565 to 1566 he attended the monastery school in Bebenhausen near Tübingen and studied Protestant theology at the University of Tübingen from 1566 to 1572 . Primož Trubar ( Primus Truber ) had him translate Genesis into Slovenian in 1572 . At the invitation of the Carniolan estates, Dalmatin took up his post in Ljubljana in 1572 as a Protestant preacher in Slovene ( Windisch ) and German. He wrote various religious books.

Shortly after Primož Trubar had already translated the New Testament from the German text by Martin Luther into Slovenian , Dalmatin was the first to translate the entire Holy Scriptures from Hebrew or Greek into his mother tongue. He used the German version of Martin Luther to help.

To translate the Bible he is said to have stayed under the protection of Herbard VIII von Auersperg at Auersperg Castle in Lower Carniola. To find a printing company , he went to Graz and Klagenfurt in October 1580 . The Bible translation was published in Wittenberg in 1584 . In the following years 870 of his Slovenian Bibles were hidden in barrels and transported to Carniola , 330 to Styria and 300 to Carinthia .
