history

The Krka in Kostanjevica

The settlement founded by the Spanheimers emerged at the beginning of the 13th century. It was first called a city around 1210, and its market rights were put on record in 1249. Around 1234, Duke Bernhard von Spanheim founded the Cistercian monastery of Mariabrunn ( Latin: Fons Beatae Mariae ). The Mariabrunn Monastery (now Slovene Kostanjevica) was a subsidiary of the Viktring Monastery near Klagenfurt in Carinthia . Until the end of the Habsburg Empire , Kostanjevica na Krki belonged to the Crown Land of Carniola , with Kostanjevica forming its own municipality. Kostanjevica was also the seat of the judicial district Landstraß , which in turn belonged to the Gurkfeld district .

Due to its island location, the city at the foot of the Gorjanci is often flooded, which is why it was nicknamed Venice of Dolenjska (Dolenjske Benetke).

In 2002 the city celebrated the 750th anniversary of the first documentary mention.
