The 1886 hurricane season began on June 1 and ended on November 30. This is the period when most of the tropical storms occur in the Atlantic Basin.

Storms

The season started with three storms going ashore in June. This makes 1886 the only year in which three hurricanes occurred in June (1909, 1936 and 1968 there were three tropical storms in June). The first hurricane hit near the border between Louisiana and Texas on land, the other two in Florida .

The fourth storm of the year occurred on July 12 in the western Caribbean . It was moving north and reached hurricane strength on July 18 before going ashore in Florida. It reached its top speed of 137 km / h over the western Atlantic and was downgraded to an extratropical storm on July 22nd.

The Indianola hurricane of 1886 caused catastrophic damage to what was then the largest and most economically important city in Texas. Indianola was hit in late August, the hurricane had a speed of 250 km / h on shore leave and was thus on the border between categories 4 and 5. At least 25 people died.

The sixth storm of the season, which formed on August 15, already moved as a hurricane over the Lesser Antilles , and crossed the Caribbean. Jamaica was hit with wind speeds of 177 km / h. When the storm hit Cuba it was even more intense. It then moved northeast and disbanded south of Newfoundland on August 27 .

The seventh storm was a hurricane that broke up in the Atlantic off Canada.

The eighth storm took a westerly course through Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico . He turned north, into the western Gulf, and landed on September 23 near Brownsville , Texas at about 160 km / h.

In late September there was the ninth storm over the open central Atlantic.

A tropical storm was observed in the northeastern Caribbean on October 8th. It moved northwest and reached hurricane strength on the 11th over the Gulf of Mexico. Late on October 12, the storm hit land near the Louisiana-Texas border. The associated heavy rains and a tidal wave killed 175 to 200 people and caused a quarter of a million dollars in damage.

The last two storms took a course northeast, with the second crossing Haiti before turning out to sea.
