The 1961 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30. While a total of eight cyclones were counted this season, there were seven strong hurricanes ( category 3+), the second highest number recorded so far. 1961 was the second of just five seasons in which two or more category five hurricanes formed (the others were 1960 , 2005 , 2007, and 2017 ).
The best known and most powerful hurricanes were the two Category 5 hurricanes Carla , which hit Texas and killed 49 people and caused damage of US $ 325 million (1961), and Hattie , which devastated Belize and killed 200 people there, and Belize City largely destroyed. That was a reason to move the capital there to Belmopan in 1970 .
Hurricane Debbie , assigned to level 3, swings as a tropical cyclone towards Ireland , where it subsides into a severe storm above the sea and moves on to the northeast. The Irish weather station on Malin Head recorded its highest wind speed to date on September 16, 1961. The storm killed 11 people in Ireland and caused severe damage in the UK.
Storm names
During the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season, the following storm names were used. Frances, Hattie, Inga and Jenny were first used to name a hurricane, tropical storms were not given a name at the time.
