Atlantic hurricane season 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015 |
The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season officially started on June 1st and ended on November 30th. It is during this period that most hurricanes usually form , as it is only at this time that suitable conditions exist, such as warm ocean , moist air, and little wind shear , to allow tropical cyclones to form. The 2013 season was the first since the 1994 season that no major hurricane formed. The first storm of the season, Andrea, formed on June 5th and the last storm of the season, an unnamed subtropical storm, broke up on December 7th. During the hurricane season only two hurricanes formed, Humberto and Ingrid, as few as since the 1982 hurricane season .
Storms in the Pacific Ocean are listed in the article Pacific Hurricane Season 2013 .

Predictions about the activity of the coming hurricane season are made every year by the hurricane experts Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray and their colleagues at Colorado State University and separately by the meteorologists of NOAA and the consortium Tropical Storm Risk .
Klotzbach's team defined the average number of storms per season on average (1950-2000) at 9.6 tropical storms, 5.9 hurricanes and 2.3 severe hurricanes (ie those that are at least in on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale be classified as category 3). A normal season, as determined by NOAA, consists of 9-12 named storms, of which 5-7 become hurricane strength and 1-3 become severe hurricanes.
Forecasts before the start of the season
On December 5, 2012, Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), a public consortium of insurance, risk management and seasonal climate forecasting experts at University College London , issued a medium-term forecast assuming an above-average hurricane season for 2013. In the report, TSR found that tropical cyclone activity could be about 30% above the 1950-2012 average, with 15.4 (± 4.3) tropical storms, 7.7 (± 2.9) hurricanes, and 3 , 4 (± 1.6) major hurricanes and a cumulative ACE index of 134 were expected.
On April 8, 2013, Weather Services International (WSI) issued a forecast that assumes an above-average hurricane season in 2013 with 16 tropical storms, 9 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes.
On May 15, 2013, the Met Office published a forecast that assumes a slightly above-average hurricane season in 2013. Accordingly, the number of named storms will be 14 and the number of hurricanes will be 9.
Eight days after the Met Office , on May 23, 2013, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also released a forecast for the 2013 hurricane season, according to which there will be 13-20 named storms, of which 7-11 would become hurricanes and of those in turn, 3-6 severe hurricanes would occur.

intensity | 55 kn (100 km / h ) (1 minute) , 1003 hPa |
Storm course
On August 29, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began observing a tropical wave about 1,000 km east of the Lesser Antilles . Over the next few days, the disturbance moved westward, but failed to organize. It was only when the system reached the Lesser Antilles on September 1st that it had a medium probability of developing into a tropical depression. By late September 4, the fault had organized itself 210 km south of San Juan , Puerto Rico , so that it was classified as Tropical Depression Seven . Just six hours later, the low pressure area reached storm force and was named Gabrielle . On the afternoon of September 5, the National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm to a tropical low pressure area. In the early morning of the following day, the low pressure area 45 km north-northwest of Punta Cana , Dominican Republic, completely dissolved. After the remaining depth moved into the open Atlantic , however, it showed signs of regeneration. On September 10, the National Hurricane Center upgraded the system 300 km south of Bermuda to another tropical storm. After Gabrielle peaked with winds of 95 km / h, the storm quickly subsided and by the evening of September 11th was nothing more than a tropical depression. Early on September 12th, however, the system was able to regain the strength of a tropical storm before it weakened again into a tropical low pressure area and late on September 13th degenerated 290 km south of Halifax , Canada into an extra-tropical residual low .

intensity | 80 kn (150 km / h ) (1 minute) , 979 hPa |
Storm course
On the evening of September 6th, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began observing a tropical wave over Senegal . A day later it reached the sea and had a high probability of developing into a tropical depression. The system quickly organized itself and was classified as Tropical Depression Nine on September 8 , when it was located approximately 440 km east-southeast of Cape Verde . 12 hours later, the low pressure area intensified into a tropical storm that was named Humberto . Humberto intensified rapidly, reaching the strength of a strong tropical storm on September 10th. Early on September 11th, the National Hurricane Center updated the storm to be the first hurricane of the season. Humberto reached its peak the following day with wind speeds of 140 km and an air pressure of 982 hPa . After that, the eye of the hurricane quickly dissolved and it quickly weakened into a tropical storm. On the afternoon of September 14, the storm degenerated to an extra-tropical residual low about 1,580 km northwest of Cape Verde. However, the National Hurricane Center gave the system a high chance of developing into a tropical storm again. On September 16, the remaining low had regenerated enough to be upgraded to a tropical storm again in the afternoon. However, Humberto could not develop significantly in the next few days and remained at the strength of a weak tropical storm. On the evening of September 18, the storm weakened to a tropical low pressure area and dissolved the following day 1,435 km west-southwest of the Azores .
