Pacific typhoon seasons
2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015

The 2013 Pacific typhoon season was an ongoing weather event that summarized the tropical cyclones that formed throughout the calendar year . Most tropical cyclones form in the Pacific Ocean west of the date line and north of the equator, however, between May and November. Such tropical cyclones are called typhoons . The storms forming east of the 180th degree of longitude are the subject of the 2013 Pacific hurricane season .

Within the northwestern Pacific, there are two meteorological organizations that give names to storms. As a result, the same storm is often given two different names. The official designation by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is given to a tropical storm as soon as it reaches ten-minute wind speeds of 35 knots (around 65 km / h) anywhere in the northwestern Pacific  . The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), on the other hand, assigns names to tropical low pressure areas that develop within the national area of responsibility or move there; this area of responsibility is roughly defined between 115 ° and 135 ° east longitude and between 5 ° and 25 ° north latitude. PAGASA assigns a local name even if the system has already been named by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Tropical depressions that from the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center are observed, get a number with the suffix W .

The following day, the depression moved northwest, crossing Mindanao in the evening hours . Early on January 3rd, the JTWC published a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the system before PAGASA upgraded it to a tropical depression that same day and gave it the local name Auring . Later that day, the JTWC updated the system to a tropical depression and named it 01W . Shortly thereafter, the JMA upgraded the Depression to the first tropical storm of the season, named Sonamu .

The following day, however, the JMA reported that the system had weakened due to wind shear in an area with low air pressure. As it began to reorganize on January 8th, the JMA again updated the system to a tropical depression. On the evening of January 11th, PAGASA also updated the system to a tropical depression and named it Bising . Just two days later, the JMA downgraded the depression to an area of low air pressure.

During its existence, Cimaron moved largely in a north-westerly direction, grazing the northern tip of Luzon, but could not identify itself significantly. The residual low passed west of Taiwan on July 19 and completely dissolved over mainland China on July 20.

Heavy rain over the south of Fujian Province triggered significant flooding, as the area had already received extensive rainfall the week before from Typhoon Soulik. On August 8, a tropical fault embedded in the Innertropical Convergence Zone developed south of Guam . The system intensified to a tropical depression the next day before it moved to PAGASA's area of responsibility and was given the local name Labuyo .

Thanks to weak vertical wind shear and strong radial outflow, a cirrus cloud shield formed over the ground level circulation center and a few hours later on August 9, both the JMA and JTWC upgraded the rapidly intensifying system to a tropical storm, and the JMA gave the name Utor . Just twelve hours later, the tropical storm reached wind speeds of more than 63 knots and was therefore upgraded to a typhoon. The further intensification was explosive, and on August 11 the typhoon east of Luzon reached its greatest strength with a central air pressure of 925  hPa . Utor moved steadily in a west-north-westerly direction, formed an eye and came across land in the east of the province of Aurora with sustained wind speeds of 175 km / h and gusts of up to 210 km / h as a category 4 typhoon.

After landfall, the cyclone lost its force due to the mountainous landscape and continued on its way west-northwest. Typhoon Utor came across water again and crossed the South China Sea equivalent to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. On August 14, the center of the storm in southern China's Guangdong Province, west of Hong Kong, moved across land and quickly lost its force.

Haiyan hit land on the island of Samar around 600 kilometers southeast of Manila . On the coasts of the islands of Leyte and Samar it caused waves up to 5 meters high. The islands of Bohol and Cebu are also among the regions affected . These were shaken by a severe earthquake in October 2013. 680,000 people had to get to safety from the storm, which devastated the island of Samar and moved in a north-westerly direction across the South China Sea. The typhoon weakened continuously and crossed the coast in northern Vietnam as a tropical storm.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, the typhoon reached sustained one-minute winds of 305 km / h three hours before landfall, making it the strongest tropical cyclone that has been observed since reliable meteorological records began. After the minimum central air pressure, Haiyan is the fourth most intense tropical cyclone in the northwestern Pacific at 895 hPa. Since the typhoon hardly lost any of its intensity over land, with wind speeds of 305–315 km / h it is the strongest tropical cyclone at the moment of landfall. Typhoon Haiyan broke the record set by Hurricane Camille in Mississippi in 1969 .

Storm names

International names

Tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific are named by the responsible Regional Specialized Meteorological Center in Tokyo of the Japan Meteorological Agency . These are given a name as soon as they reach the strength of a tropical storm. The names come from the following list; this is used continuously, so there are no annually changing lists of names like in the eastern North Pacific or the Atlantic. The names were proposed by the 14 member states of the ESCAP / WMO Typhoon Committee . Each of these members has submitted ten names, which are sorted alphabetically according to the English spelling of these states. The next 30 names on the list are:

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) uses its own naming scheme for tropical systems in its area of responsibility. PAGASA's lists of names are reused every four years. These names are given to systems that develop in PAGASA's area of responsibility between 115 ° and 135 ° east longitude and between 5 ° and 25 ° north latitude or migrate into this area. If the list of names proves to be insufficient, the names are taken from a replacement list.
