Pacific typhoon season
2005 2006 2007 2008 , 2009

The 2007 Pacific typhoon season ran from January 1 to December 31, 2007, although most cyclones in the northwestern Pacific Ocean form between May and November.

Tropical storms that formed in the northern hemisphere in the Pacific Ocean west of the date line are called typhoons . The hurricanes that formed in the Pacific Ocean east of the date line and north of the equator in 2007 are the subject of the 2007 Pacific hurricane season . Tropical storms that form in the western Pacific Ocean are named by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Tropical low pressure areas in this basin are given the suffix "W" to the consecutive numbering by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center . Tropical systems that form in the Philippines' area of responsibility or migrate into it are given a name by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). This can lead to storms having two different names.

Since the typhoon season 2000, the Institute for Atmospheric Research at the City University of Hong Kong has published forecasts of the expected number of tropical depressions, named storms and typhoons in one season. The forecasts will be announced in April and June.

Accordingly, in April 2007 a slightly below-average season was forecast. According to the university, an average season has 31 tropical systems, 27 of which are named storms by the JMA and 17 of them become typhoons. The April forecast assumed a total of 28 systems, 25 named storms and 14 typhoons. In the June 2007 update, the values were corrected: 27 tropical systems, 24 named storms and 14 typhoons.

Season course

In terms of the number of storms, the 2007 season was average; it was still unusual because the number of victims was 160 people killed and the total amount of property damage was relatively low at 1.6 billion US dollars . In 2007 only one typhoon of the highest category formed, which - albeit with several more years - is the lowest number since 1950, when no storm of this intensity was formed.

Storms

The wind speeds determined by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the JMA often differ from one another for the following storms, since the JTWC uses the standard in the United States of a one-minute average value to measure the sustained winds during the JMA uses the mean value from a ten-minute series of observations. This generally leads to a lower wind speed. In the wind descriptions of the JTWC, one and the same storm appears stronger compared to the assessment by the JMA.

Typhoon Kong-rey

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 3 typhoon
Kong-rey 2007-04-03 0350Z.jpg Kong-rey 2007 track.png
Duration April 1 - April 6
intensity 80 kn (150 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 960 hPa

On March 26, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center identified an extensive area of low pressure in the western North Pacific. It migrated in a west-northwest direction and slowly gained organization over the next few days. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) classified the low on March 30th as a tropical depression. The next day, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert , as the circulation of the system near the surface of the water had greatly improved. The JTWC issued the first warnings for Tropical Depression 01W in the late evening (local time). As the lows worsened, the JTWC classified it as the first tropical storm of the season. The JMA followed suit and named Kong-rey. This name was suggested by Cambodia and refers to a figure in a Khmer saga and is also the name of a mountain .

Kong-rey continued to organize itself and intensified into a severe tropical storm the next morning (local time). The JTWC upgraded the storm to a typhoon on April 2. After the system embarked on a slightly more poleward orbit to the northern Mariana Islands , the National Weather Service in Guam announced that no damaging winds were to be expected on the island. Elsewhere in the Mariana Islands, precautionary measures were taken and flights were canceled in anticipation of the typhoon. Kong-rey passed over the islands early on April 3rd. Kong-rey was classified as a typhoon by the JMA when the system formed an eye that afternoon . The typhoon intensified slightly before encountering wind shear and cooler surface water temperature and was therefore downgraded to a severe tropical storm on April 4th. As Kong-rey increased its forward speed to the northeast, the transition to an extra-tropical system began and on the morning of April 5, the JTWC issued its final warning. The JMA issued its final warning on the morning of April 6th after the storm became completely extra-tropical. The storm did not cause any personal injuries or material damage.

Typhoon Yutu (Amang)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 super typhoon
TY Yutu 2007 MODIS May 20.jpg Yutu 2007 track.png
Duration May 17th - May 23rd
intensity 95 kn (175 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 935 hPa

On May 17, a noticeably improving organization in a tropical disturbance south-southeast of Guam led to Dvorak calculations by the Air Force Weather Agency , which corresponded to a wind speed of 45 knots . A few hours later the Japan Meteorological Agency classified the system as a tropical depression and a TCFA was triggered by the JTWC. The following day, the JMA began to issue full weather warnings for the system. The system developed slowly and resulted in the issuance of a second TCFA in which the JTWC noted "an increasingly better-defined center of circulation at low altitude" . The JTWC declared the system to be Tropical Depression 02W based on intensity estimates based on satellite evaluations and QuikSCAT at 12:00 UTC .

As the system intensified, System 02W was upgraded to Tropical Storm Yutu by the JMA on May 17th. The name Yutu was suggested by China and refers to a rabbit in a Chinese fable . The JTWC followed three hours later by upgrading to Tropical Storm 02W as the center quickly moved west towards the Yap Islands . tropical storm warnings were triggered for most of Micronesia but were later withdrawn after Yutu quickly passed by.

Yutu then took a turn to the northwest and entered PAGASA's area of responsibility on May 18 , when the system reached the strength of a severe tropical storm. Pagasa assigned the name Amang . Later that day, the JTWC upgraded Yutu to a typhoon after making an eye , and the JMA took this step at 6:00 p.m. UTC after Yutu resumed intensification. The typhoon now turned towards Iwojima and began a rapid intensification with "expanded poleward-directed discharge and slight vertical shear winds " . Yutu peaked on the evening of May 20 with an intensity equivalent to a strong Category 4 hurricane and just below super typhoon graduation.

Even though Yutu hiked over cooler water, it retained a high intensity thanks to its strong poleward discharge, and the eye was 20 nautical miles (about 37 km) in diameter on the morning of May 21. Yutu then began to gradually weaken as he crossed Okinotorishima and turned to the northeast when reaching Iwojima during the day. The peak wind speeds on Iwojima were measured at around 3:00 p.m. UTC at 66 knots (122 km / h) and some sustained gusts reached up to 104 knots (193 km / h). The minimum air pressure in the center of the storm was recorded as 976  hPa . The transition to an extra-tropical cyclone then began and the JTWC issued its final warning on Yutu on the morning of May 22nd. The JMA issued their last warning a day later, when the conversion to an extra-tropical system was completed.

Tropical storm Toraji

Tropical Storm ( JMA )

Toraji 05 july 2007 0230Z.jpg Toraji 2007 track.png
Duration July 4th - July 5th
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 994 hPa

An area of disruption formed in the South China Sea on July 2 and gradually consolidated over the next two days as it moved west-northwest. A Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center on the morning of July 4th, and a little later that day, the disturbance was classified directly as a tropical storm when it was located approximately southeast of Hainan . The landfall on the island occurred shortly afterwards. According to Chinese sources, a tropical depression had formed on the morning of July 4th, and landed on the island that same afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 15 m / s (55 km / h). and its air pressure had dropped to 988 hPa, which two days later passed again over the island. More than 147,000 people were evacuated in Guangxi in response to the storm.

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the depression to Tropical Storm Toraji on the morning of July 5, when it was in the Gulf of Tonkin . The name Toraji was contributed by North Korea and refers to the balloon flower , an ornamental plant.

The system did not intensify much over the Gulf of Tonkin. The JMA determined the lowest air pressure in the system at 994  hPa and recorded the storm as a minimal tropical storm. After the landfall in Vietnam around 12:00 UTC, the JTWC issued its final warning on Toraji, and the JMA followed suit a short time later.

Typhoon Man-yi (Bebeng)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 typhoon
Man-Yi 12 july 2007 0505Z.jpg Man-yi 2007 track.png
Duration July 7th - July 16th
intensity 95 kn (175 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 930 hPa

The Naval Research Laboratory began tracking a weather fault just north of the equator on July 4 . The center of circulation and surrounding convection began to take shape even though the system was on the verge of a high pressure zone and there was moderate vertical wind shear . The air pressure dropped less than 0.5  hPa as the system moved westward on July 6th. On the morning of July 7th, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) ran the system as a weak tropical depression, and a few hours later the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert when the depression was consolidating and forming a band structure at the same time the conditions at altitude became more favorable for system development.

Typhoon Man-yi over Okinawa

The JTWC issued its first warning of Tropical Depression 04W a little later that day and predicted further intensification, as weak to moderate wind shear and weak poleward discharge balanced the effects of the ocean's warmth. The JMA began issuing full weather warnings at the same time. As the low pressure area formed better, the JTWC upgraded it to a tropical storm the following night. The JMA eventually followed this step a little later and named the system Man-yi . The name "Man-yi" was submitted by Hong Kong and is the Chinese name of a strait that was converted into a reservoir for storing drinking water (the High Island Reservoir ). Man-yi continued to organize and turned into a severe tropical storm on July 9th that tore down electricity lines, causing widespread power outages in Guam . Tropical storm warnings and typhoon readiness have been declared for most of the Micronesian state of Yap . The strong waves caused by the typhoon capsized a ship 600 km northwest of Guam, killing three crew members and missing six.

On the afternoon of July 10, the JTWC upgraded the storm to a typhoon based on intensity estimates using the Dvorak technique by the JMA, but also by the JTWC. In the early morning of the next day, the typhoon reached the area of responsibility of the Philippine weather observation authority and was given the name Bebeng by PAGASA . At the same time, Man-yi was upgraded to a typhoon by the JMA.

After Man-yi crossed warmer water, the pressure began to drop rapidly late on July 11th and early on July 12th as the typhoon hit Okinawa , Japan . Man-yi was upgraded to a super typhoon twice while roaming the prefecture the next day. The draft caused 37 injuries and widespread power cuts in Okinawa . After a short time overland in Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyūshū in the morning of the next day, Man-yi turned eastward. After further brief land contacts in the prefecture of Kōchi on Shikoku and in the prefecture of Wakayama on Honshū , the influence of the country and the incipient transformation into an extra-tropical storm led to the weakening of the typhoon, which was transformed into a tropical storm by the JTWC and a severe one by the JMA tropical storm was downgraded. Man-yi went extra-tropical on July 15, and the JTWC issued its final warning about the system. The Japanese weather agency issued its final warning two days later.

Typhoon Usagi

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 typhoon
Usagi 01 Aug 2007 0125Z.jpg Usagi 2007 track.png
Duration July 29th - August 4th
intensity 90 kn (165 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 945 hPa

On July 26, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center identified a weather disturbance east of the Mariana Islands . The area was moving west and becoming more organized, so a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued on July 27 by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center . The Japan Meteorological Agency classified the system as a tropical depression that day. The next day, the JMA began issuing storm warnings and the JTWC followed suit and designated the system as Tropical Depression 05W.

The system strengthened rapidly as it got closer to the Mariana Islands and the JTWC upgraded it to a tropical storm six hours later. The JMA upgraded the system to Tropical Storm Usagi in the early hours of July 29th. The name Usagi was submitted by Japan and means " rabbit " in the Japanese language . The National Weather Service in Guam issued storm warnings for Pagan and Agrihan in the northern Mariana Islands shortly after the system was upgraded.

Usagi passed between Pagan and Agrihan on July 29th and began a rapid intensification. The JTWC raised the storm to a typhoon in the course of the day and cited evaluations by Dvorak technology , with which the wind speed was estimated at 65 knots , and the formation of an eye . The system turned in a northwesterly direction and early on July 30th the JMA upgraded the system to a severe tropical storm and then to a typhoon on July 31st in the passage south of Iwojima . Usagi hiked northwest, peaking over warmer water on August 1, before weakening as it approached Kyūshū due to lower water surface temperature and increasing wind shear . When Usagi landed near Nobeoka , Miyazaki Prefecture on August 2, it was a rapidly weakening typhoon that was downgraded to a severe tropical storm shortly afterwards. As the system crossed Kyūshū and Honshū , this weakening continued and the JMA declared Usagi a tropical storm.

The JTWC downgraded the system to a tropical storm late on August 2nd and issued the final warning to Usagi on August 3rd as the transformation to an extra-tropical system began. After further land contacts in Aomori Prefecture in northern Honshu, the system became completely extra-tropical and the JMA stopped issuing further warnings on August 4th. Usagi was responsible for 18 injuries on Kyushu.

Typhoon Pabuk (Chedeng)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Pabuk 07 aug 2007 0107Z.jpg Pabuk 2007 track.png
Duration August 4th - August 9th
intensity 65 kn (120 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 975 hPa

A tropical disturbance formed over Chuuk in the early morning of July 31st, which moved in a west-northwest direction during the following days without the system becoming much better organized. However, on August 4, convection began to improve rapidly and the Japan Meteorological Agency in Tokyo began observing a tropical depression. The system continued to intensify and a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Honolulu on the morning of August 5th , as the area around the trough was extremely favorable for further development. A short time later, the Japan Meteorological Agency classified the low as Tropical Storm Pabuk. The name Pabuk was submitted by Laos and refers to a large freshwater fish species in the Mekong . The JTWC assigned the storm the designation 07W and on August 5, PAGASA named the system with the Filipino name Chedeng . Pabuk moved further northwest and formed better after the system slowly built up a discharge . The Japanese weather agency upgraded the system to the level of a severe tropical storm on August 6. When Pabuk approached Taiwan westward , part of the convection area separated and formed an independent circulation near the surface of the water. However, Pabuk's discharge at high altitude hampered this new convection area. After a slight intensification, Pabuk was upgraded to a typhoon on the morning of August 7th. Honolulu later reset Pabuk's intensity to a tropical storm, and Tokyo downgraded Pabuk just before landfall in southern Taiwan around 4:30 p.m. UTC. According to the Taiwanese weather radar observations , the center of the storm crossed the Hengchun Peninsula . The JTWC upgraded Pabuk to a typhoon for another three hours because a small eye was made out when it landed .

After Pabuk passed over Taiwan, the storm headed for Hong Kong . The Hong Kong Observatory and Macau's Meteorological Authorities both signaled strong wind signal number 3 on Aug. 9 as the low pressure system passed south of Hong Kong. A little later, the JMA downgraded the system to a tropical depression and issued the last warning about the system. The tropical low then reversed east-northeast on August 10, causing the Hong Kong Observatory to raise signal number 3 again. The Hong Kong Education Bureau closed all schools for the day. At 14:30 HKT (6:30 UTC ), signal number 8 was issued after Pabuk got closer to the territory. This step was withdrawn the following night when Pabuk made another change of direction and headed west inland on Guangdong . Early the next morning. On August 11th, Pabuk resumed its north-easterly course and again approached the river delta of the Pearl River before it weakened further and the HKO revoked all signals.

At least 11 people were killed by Pabuk in the Philippines.

Tropical Storm Wutip (Dodong)

Tropical Storm ( JMA )
Tropical depression

Duration August 8th - August 8th
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 990 hPa

South of the developing Tropical Storm Pabuk, a weather disturbance formed on August 5, which the Joint Typhoon Warning Center first reported on August 6. The Japan Meteorological Agency classified the system as a tropical depression the following night. Although the system was still connected to Pabuk and hampered by wind shear from an anticyclone overlying Pabuk at altitude, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert . After Pabuk left, the depression intensified and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Wutip by the JMA on the morning of August 8th. The name Wutip was suggested by Macau and means " butterfly ". The storm struggled with the influence of the country and could therefore not intensify noticeably. It remained ill-organized and quickly weakened. The JMA issued its final warning early on August 9 and downgraded Wutip to a tropical depression.

Wutip killed three people and injured 17 others in the Philippines , called Dodong there .

Typhoon Sepat (Egay)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 5 super typhoon
Sepat 16 aug 2007 0225Z.jpg Sepat 2007 track.png
Duration August 12th - August 19th
intensity 110 kn (205 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 910 hPa

West of the Northern Mariana Islands , a weather
disruption formed on August 11, and in the early morning of the following day, the JMA began issuing warnings about the system and the JTWC in Honolulu designated the system as Tropical Depression 09W. Twelve hours later, Honolulu upgraded the low to a tropical storm after insity estimates made with satellite photos and Dvorak technology and the storm exhibited tightly curved spiral bands. A high pressure zone at high altitude reduced the wind shear that acted on the storm. The JTWC warned of rapid intensification. The JMA later declared the low a tropical storm Sepat on August 12th. The name Sepat was submitted by Malaysia and is the name of a freshwater fish.

By the morning of August 13th, Sepat had moved to PAGASA's area of responsibility and was given the name Egay . Shortly thereafter, the JMA classified Sepat as a severe tropical storm. During the night the rapid intensification of Sepat occurred as expected and the JTWC upgraded Sepat to a super typhoon the next morning. Sepat reduced its forward speed and took a turn from its west-south-westerly direction to a slightly more poleward course. Sepat reached its lowest core air pressure of 910 hPa on the morning of August 16  . A high surface water temperature and a stable discharge directed towards the equator helped Sepat to maintain its intensity, but regeneration of the eye resulted in a weakening. After the landfall in eastern Taiwan between Taitung and Hualien on the morning of August 18 at around 5 a.m. local time (9:00 p.m. UTC on August 17), Sepat weakened to a minimal typhoon. After Sepat had crossed the island and returned to sea as a minimal typhoon, the night weakened to a severe tropical storm. The morning after the second mainland landfall in the People's Republic of China , Sepat was downgraded to a tropical storm, and after further inland weakening, the JMA issued its final warning for the system on the morning of August 20.

The monsoons of Typhoon Sepat paralyzed traffic in Greater Manila on August 15 . Schools and authorities were closed until August 17th.

Typhoon Fitow

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Fitow 06 sept 2007 0415Z.jpg Fitow 2007 track.png
Duration August 29th - September 8th
intensity 70 kn (130 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 965 hPa

On August 28, the organization of a weather disruption east-northeast of Saipan increased, so that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center received warnings about the 10W Tropical Depression the next morning and the JMA in Tokyo followed this step immediately. Due to the favorable conditions for development, the system intensified rapidly and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Fitow by the afternoon of August 29 and to a severe tropical storm by evening. The name Fitow was suggested by Micronesia and is the name of a flower. The intensification continued, and in the morning hours of August 30th, Fitov was declared a typhoon. After making landfall near Tokyo late on September 6th, JMA Fitow downgraded to a severe tropical storm in the early September 7th and downgraded to a tropical storm later in the day, which resolved the following day.

In Japan, Fitow killed seven people and at least 50 others were injured in the strong winds and rains. More than 80,000 households were affected by a power outage. Trains canceled in the Tokyo metropolitan area and nearly 200 flights to Tokyo were canceled. Flash floods occurred along the Tama River , carrying homeless people along its banks.

Severe tropical storm Danas

Severe Tropical Storm ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Danas 09 sept 2007 2318Z.jpg Danas 2007 track.png
Duration September 7th - September 11th
intensity 55 kn (100 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 990 hPa

In the early morning of August 3, an area of tropical disturbance formed northwest of Wake , moving first north and then northwest. The system organized itself better and was classified as a tropical depression by the JMA on September 6th. A TCFA was triggered on the same day. The system continued on its northwestward course towards Japan and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Danas in the early hours of September 7th. The name Danas was submitted by the Philippines . The westerly movement of the storm subsided and the direction of the storm turned north to northeast. On September 9, the storm reached the strength of a severe tropical storm. Cooler water temperatures let the storm weaken again on September 11th and the storm degenerated into a low pressure area that could no longer develop.

Typhoon Nari (Falcon)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 typhoon
Nari 15 sept 2007 0235Z.jpg Nari 2007 track.png
Duration September 13th - September 17th
intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 935 hPa

In an area northwest of Guam , a weather disturbance formed on September 10th, which moved in a northwest direction and slowly became better organized. The Japan Meteorological Agency began monitoring the system the next day, and after it continued to organize and intensify, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the afternoon of September 12 and began issuing storm warnings an hour later for the tropical depression 12W. The JMA follows this step in the morning of September 13; PAGASA named the system Falcon shortly afterwards . The low pressure area continued to intensify and in the course of the morning the JMA raised the system to Tropical Storm Nari. The name Nari was transmitted through South Korea and means lily .

On the afternoon and evening of September 13, the storm intensified rapidly. Within 18 hours, Nari went from a tropical depression to a typhoon. The JMA had upgraded Nari to a severe tropical storm in the late afternoon and then to a typhoon in the late evening. Nari peaked on September 14 and began weakening shortly afterwards. Nari became extra- tropical as a tropical storm in South Korea immediately after landfall . At least 20 people were killed or are missing as a result of the storm. The rainfall on Jeju-do Island reached a record 590 mm.

Typhoon Wipha (Goring)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 super typhoon

Duration September 15 - September 19
intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 925 hPa

The 13th low pressure area of the season observed by the JTWC formed from a weather disruption in the early September 13th southeast of Naha , Okinawa . The area organized itself increasingly better and in the late evening of September 14th a TCFA was triggered. The JMA classified the system as a tropical depression on September 15, and the JTWC followed suit with the identification of Tropical Depression 13W. Since the area was in the area of responsibility of PAGASA , they gave the low the name Goring a little later . On September 16, the storm had grown so much in strength that it was classified as Tropical Storm Wipha. The name Wipha was submitted by Thailand and is a female given name.

On September 17th, the storm rapidly intensified into a typhoon and was declared a super typhoon by the JTWC due to further intensification in the early morning of September 18th. In the early hours of September 19 (local time), Wipha swept the coast of mainland China near Fuding on the provincial border between Fujian and Zhejiang . However, prior to landfall, the typhoon had weakened a little, equivalent to Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale .

Originally, Wipha threatened to pass directly over Shanghai , which would have made the typhoon the most devastating Chinese typhoon in ten years, but then tilted its direction a little further south, making a direct hit unlikely. Even so, nearly two million people were evacuated in the Fujian and Zhejiang provinces around Shanghai, including 1.5 million residents of Zhejiang and 291,000 residents of low-lying areas. The Xinhua News Agency called the evacuations in the region the largest in more than half a century.

Boats, ferries and ships were ordered back to the ports to seek refuge from the typhoon. At least twenty flights were canceled and fifty delayed at the two airports in Shanghai. The typhoon forced FIFA to postpone four games of the 2007 Women's World Cup .

The floods were severe. At least 80 road links in the affected area were flooded. A man was killed when he came into contact with water that was electrically charged from a hanging pipe. The rains brought the water levels in various rivers and reservoirs to dangerous levels. In total, Wipha killed nine people and caused more than $ 880 million in property damage .

Tropical Storm Francisco

Tropical Storm ( JMA )

Duration September 23 - September 25
intensity 40 kn (75 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 990 hPa

A weather disturbance formed on September 19 in an area approximately 190 nautical miles southeast of Hong Kong . It was recognized as a tropical depression by the JMA on September 23. Nine hours later, the system was upgraded to Tropical Storm Francisco by both the JMA and JTWC. The storm traveled west and over Wenchang on Hainan on September 24th . Land influence and wind shear caused Francisco to weaken into a tropical depression and the warnings were discontinued. The name Francisco was suggested by the United States and is a typical Chamorro name.

Severe tropical storm Lekima (Hanna)

Severe Tropical Storm ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Lekima 03 oct 2007 0306Z.jpg Lekima 2007 track.png
Duration September 30th - October 4th
intensity 60 kn (110 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 965 hPa

A weather disturbance near the Philippines quickly developed and PAGASA was the first to upgrade the system to the Hanna Tropical Depression on September 27th. The next day the low intensified into a tropical storm. Shortly after the landfall in the center of Luzón Island early on September 29th, the JMA classified the system as Tropical Storm Lekima. The system continued to intensify and was upgraded to Severe Tropical Storm on September 30th. It maintained this strength until landfall. Overland, Lekima disbanded on October 5th.

The heavy rains that Lekima carried with it caused a landslide in Hingyon in the Ifugao province of Luzón that killed eight people and another in Quezon City . Heavy rains with landslides, flash floods and damage to the infrastructure also occurred in other provinces. In southern China, more than 100,000 residents were evacuated as the storm approached and more than 20,000 fishing boats were recalled to ports.

When it landed in Vietnam on October 3, Lekima was a severe tropical storm. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and the effects of the storm in Vietnam are reported to have killed 42 people.

Typhoon Krosa (Ineng)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 4 super typhoon

Duration October 2nd - October 8th
intensity 105 kn (195 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 925 hPa

At the end of September, a new system formed east of the Philippines, which PAGASA declared to be the Ineng Tropical Low Pressure Area in the morning of October 1st. Shortly afterwards, the JMA and JTWC also classified the system. It was promoted to Tropical Storm Krosa on October 2nd. On that day the storm intensified rapidly and by the middle of the day the JTWC upgraded the storm to a typhoon. As it intensified, a large, clear eye emerged and the system began to move west. The JMA declared the system to be a typhoon on the morning of October 3rd. The intensification continued to a Category 4 equivalent on October 4th. As Krosa approached Taiwan , the JMA recorded wind speeds of up to 105 knots and the JTWC declared Krosa a super typhoon in the morning of October 5th. It weakened slightly before making landfall in northeastern Taiwan on October 6th. At least 17 people were killed on the island by the effects of the typhoon that headed for China . On October 25, a weather disturbance was classified as a tropical depression by the JMA; Early the next day, the JMA named the system migrating northwest as Tropical Storm Faxai. The JTWC recorded the system as a tropical depression in the early part of October 26, but declared it extra-tropical twelve hours later without reaching the strength of a tropical storm. PAGASA classified the system as Tropical Storm Juaning around the same time the JTWC acquired the system. During the day of October 26th, the JTWC resumed the warnings about the system and reported it as a tropical storm. At the beginning of October 27, the JMA declared Faxai a severe tropical storm; that day, the JTWC stopped issuing storm warnings again because Faxai had completed its conversion to an extra-tropical system. The JMA also issued the last warning on that day.

Typhoon Peipah (Kabayan)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Peipah 06 nov 2007 0124Z.jpg Peipah 2007 track.png
Duration November 3rd - November 9th
intensity 70 kn (130 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 970 hPa

On November 2nd, a weather disturbance formed east of the Philippines, which on November 3rd was classified by the JTWC as Tropical Depression 21W and by PAGASA as Tropical Depression Kabayan. The system went under a rapid development and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Peipah by the JMA on the same day. Peipah is the Chinese name of a popular ornamental fish and was suggested by Macau . The system turned into a severe tropical storm early on November 4th. Later that same day, the JTWC classified the system as a typhoon. Up until the landfall in Palanan , Isabela Province , strong winds swept across northern Luzón, covering roofs, tearing down power lines and making many roads impassable. After the storm hit the open sea of the Philippine Sea again , the JMA also upgraded the system to a typhoon. The trend of amplification was short-lived as the obstruction to the discharge weakened the system on November 7th. The system broke up on November 9th before reaching the coast of Vietnam .

Tropical storm Tapah

Tropical Storm ( JMA )
Tropical storm
Tapah 12 nov 2007 0059Z.jpg Tapah 2007 track.png
Duration November 11th - November 13th
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 996 hPa

On November 6, a weather disturbance developed north of Chuuk , initially moving northwestward. The system developed slowly, and in the early part of November 10th, the Japan Meteorological Agency began monitoring the system as a tropical depression. Early on November 11th, the first warnings were issued and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert shortly thereafter . During the day, the JTWC named the system Tropical Depression 22W. The development of the northward migratory system began to accelerate and the JMA upgraded the low to Tropical Storm Tapah on the morning of November 12, and the JTWC followed a little later with upgrading to Tropical Storm 22W. During the day, both the JTWC and the JMA revoked Tapah's status as a tropical depression and issued their final warnings because Tapah had a poorly developed center of circulation and had begun to transform into an extra-tropical system.

The name Tapah was suggested by Malaysia and refers to a freshwater fish.

Typhoon Hagibis (Lando)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 1 typhoon
Hagibis 23 nov 2007 0213Z.jpg Hagibis 2007 track.png
Duration November 18 - November 28
intensity 70 kn (130 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 970 hPa

On November 18, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a TCFA because a tropical disturbance was forming east of the Philippines. Later that day, the JTWC classified the fault as Tropical Depression 23W. PAGASA declared the system a Tropical Depression Lando in the early hours of November 19 and upgraded it to a tropical storm shortly thereafter. On November 21, the storm intensified into a severe tropical storm, and that afternoon the JTWC declared the system a typhoon. The JMA took this step in the evening. The storm then tumbled off the coast of Vietnam and began to weaken on November 22nd. On November 24th, due to the Fujiwhara effect from Typhoon Mina , the system turned east again, back into the South China Sea, and back to the Philippines. After the system crossed the Philippines again, Hagibis weakened east of the archipelago on November 28 to a low pressure area and the JMA issued the last storm warning. As an extra-tropical system, Hagibis crossed the northern Pacific to the east and contributed to the Great Coastal Storm of 2007 with its moisture .

Hagibis caused the deaths of nine people in the Visayas and Mindanao archipelagos .

The name Hagibis was suggested by the Philippines and means "speed".

Typhoon Mitag (Mina)

Typhoon ( JMA )
Category 2 typhoon
Wed 23 nov 0146Z.jpg Midday 2007 track.png
Duration November 20th - November 27th
intensity 80 kn (150 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 955 hPa

On November 20, a weather disturbance intensified east of the Philippines and was classified as Tropical Storm Mitag by the JMA. The storm intensified significantly on the morning of November 21 and was upgraded to a severe tropical storm. On the same day, Mitag was recognized as a typhoon.

The Philippine authorities began evacuating approximately 200,000 people from the Bicol region on November 23 as Mitag approached the coast. The province of Albay declared a state of emergency.

After having remained stationary in the Philippine Sea for about a day, with an intensity equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane, he changed course and instead of hitting Catanduanes and the Bicol region, the landfall was now on the border of the provinces of Aurora and Isabela predicted. However, PAGASA announced that there was a possibility of turning off again. The storm then actually turned northwest towards north Luzón under the influence of the Fujiwhara effect triggered by Typhoon Hagibis . After making landfall in the late evening of November 25th, Mitag crossed the island and was downgraded to a severe tropical storm until it came back across open water on November 26th. Before the storm reached Taiwan , it turned again to the east and became extra-tropical on November 27th. The system crossed the North Pacific eastward and, like Hagibis, contributed to the Great Coastal Storm of 2007 with heavy rainfall .

PAGASA gave Taifun Mitag the name Mina. A total of ten people were killed in the Philippines as a result of the impact of the typhoon.

Other storms

The following systems were not named by the JMA, but some of them have been observed by it as tropical depressions. However, they have been designated as tropical cyclones by the weather observation authorities in the Philippines (PAGASA), China (CMA), Thailand (TMD) and / or by the JTWC.

Tropical Depression TD2 (TMD)

Tropical Depression ( TMD )
TMD Depression 02 may 2007 0403Z.jpg
Duration May 1st - May 5th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 1006 hPa

On April 26, a weather disturbance formed east of the Malay Peninsula . On May 1, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) classified this low pressure cell in the Gulf of Thailand as a tropical low pressure area with the designation TD2. After the landfall ten hours later in the Amphoe Pathiu , Chumphon province , the low crossed the Isthmus of Kra and entered the Andaman Sea .

The TMD warned the residents of the affected region of Thailand of heavy rains and possible flooding in the western provinces during the passage of the deep. In Ratchaburi province , on May 3, civil defense units prepared to evacuate settlements in the mountainous terrain. The next day, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan was declared a disaster area because lower areas were flooded up to a meter high, such as a prison in the provincial capital Prachuap Khiri Khan . The inmates had to be evacuated to Ratchaburi as a result. Much of the railway lines were flooded, but the train connections were not interrupted. In the province of Surat Thani mudslides brought traffic to a halt and in other provinces warnings were triggered landslide.

The other meteorological institutes did not classify this system as a tropical depression while it was in the Gulf of Thailand. However, it was observed by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center .

JTWC Tropical Storm 06W

Tropical depression
TS 06W 04 aug 2007 0210Z.jpg 6-W 2007 track.png
Duration August 2nd - August 6th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (1 minute) , 1000 hPa

In the South China Sea, a weather disturbance formed on July 31st, which, despite strong wind shear in the area, gradually intensified and became better organized as it was almost stationary. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the system on August 2nd and shortly thereafter classified the system as Tropical Low Pressure Area 06W and the JMA also assigned the status of a tropical low at the same time as the disruption. Despite strong wind shear in the area, the system slowly intensified as it migrated along the coast of Vietnam. The JTWC upgraded it to a tropical storm early on August 4th. Later, however, the system was downgraded to a tropical depression because it had lost most of its convection .

Extensive floods in Vietnam killed at least 65 people. According to the government, 55,000 houses were destroyed and 274,000 people lost their homes. The flood that followed flooded 100,000 hectares of agricultural land. During the passage of the tropical storm, an amount of rain of 231.6 mm was measured on Hainan.

JTWC Tropical Depression 14W

Storm names

The tropical cyclones of the western North Pacific are named by the RSMC Tokyo-Typhoon Center of the Japan Meteorological Agency . In contrast to other basins, where the storms are named on the basis of lists on an annual basis, the names in this basin are based on the following circulating list. These names were compiled by the 13 members of the ESCAP / WMO Typhoon Committee , with the exception of Singapore . These 13 states have each contributed ten names, which are arranged in the alphabetical order of the English spelling of the state names. Names with an asterisk have been removed from the list by the World Meteorological Organization due to their impact during the 2006 Pacific typhoon season . Otherwise, this list is identical to that of 2006, with the exception of the names Pakhar , Doksuri and Haikui , which replaced Matsa , Nabi and Longwang . The first storm of the season was named Kong-rey , the last was Hagibis . It is the first time the name Wipha has been used; the spelling had been corrected by Vipa in 2002.
