The cyclone season in the Southwest Indies 2012–2013 officially began on November 15, 2012 and ended on April 30, 2013 , with the exception of Mauritius and the Seychelles , where it did not end until May 15, 2013. These dates conventionally limit the time of the meteorological year of the southern hemisphere during which most tropical cyclones form in the southwestern Ind . The first tropical system formed on October 12, 2012.

The tropical cyclones in this basin are monitored by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) in Reunion Island , France . Météo-France's area of responsibility includes the Indian Ocean south of the equator and west of 90 ° east longitude . Tropical cyclones in this area are called cyclones. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Honolulu also monitors the weather in this sea area; it issues storm warnings primarily aimed at United States Armed Forces facilities in the Indian Ocean.

Storms

Intense Tropical Cyclone Anais

Intense Tropical Cyclone ( MFR )
Category 3 cyclone
Anais Oct 14 2012.jpg Anais 2012 track.png
Duration October 12th - October 19th
intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 949 hPa

On October 12th, the JTWC published a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert about a system located near the Chagos Islands . Shortly afterwards, the RSMC La Réunion updated the system to a tropical disturbance, which at that time was 130 km west of Diego Garcia and was given the designation 01R . That same afternoon, the JTWC upgraded the system to a tropical depression and named it 01S . The following day, the RSMC La Réunion reported that the disturbance had intensified into a moderate tropical storm and therefore gave it the name Anais . During the day, Anais started a rapid development with RSMC La Réunion upgrading the storm to a tropical cyclone and JTWC Anais upgrading to a Category 1 cyclone. Anais continued its rapid intensification, so early on October 14th the cyclone was upgraded to an Intense Tropical Cyclone by RSMC La Réunion. Only shortly thereafter, the JTWC upgraded Anais to a Category 3 cyclone when the system started to make a highly visible eye. Late on October 15th, the eye disappeared and the cyclone began to weaken, so JTWC Anais downgraded to a Category 1 cyclone on October 16th. The following day, the weak cyclone weakened into a tropical storm, as its circulation had largely dissolved and most of the convection disappeared. In addition, moderate vertical wind shear set in from the northwest, which further weakened the system. On October 19, the largely dissolved circulation from Anais via Madagascar went ashore and caused one or the other thunderstorm there before it later completely dissolved.

Anais is the earliest intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the South West Indies. The cyclone formed around 2 weeks before the official start of the season in the southwestern Indic.

Tropical disturbance 02R

Tropical disturbance ( MFR )
Tropical Disturbance 2 Nov 15 2012.jpg 02R 2012 track.png
Duration November 15 - November 16
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 1004 hPa

On November 8th, an area of low air pressure developed far northeast of La Réunion . It moved strictly to the west and formed a circulation. The following day, isolated convection developed around the system. The depression began to move southwest on November 12th and weakened noticeably. It became more and more disorganized, so the JTWC stopped watching the system. However, when the depression regained strength in the early morning of November 15, the JTWC began monitoring it again. At the same time, the RSMC La Réunion classified the system as a tropical disorder and gave it the designation 02R . Since the disturbance could no longer develop the next day and became more and more unorganized, the RSMC La Réunion stopped issuing warnings about the system.

Heavy Tropical Storm Boldwin

Severe Tropical Storm ( MFR )
Tropical storm
Boldwin Nov 24 2012 0845Z.jpg Boldwin 2012 track.png
Duration November 23rd - November 26th
intensity 55 kn (100 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 987 hPa

On November 13th, a cluster of thunderstorms formed on the west coast of Sumatra . Over the next few days, the cluster developed into a circulation that had organized itself enough to be classified as tropical disturbance 03R by the RSMC La Réunion on 23 November . The disorder developed rapidly, turning into a tropical depression early in the morning of November 24th and a moderate tropical storm called Boldwin only 6 hours later . Later that same day, the JTWC also began monitoring the storm and named it 02S . In the course of the afternoon, the RSMC La Réunion discovered that Boldwin had intensified further and therefore upgraded the storm to a severe tropical storm. On November 25th, vertical wind shear caused Boldwin's convection to be displaced to the southeast. On the same day, Boldwin weakened into a moderate tropical storm due to the wind shear. On the night of the following day, Boldwin's circulation largely broke up, so the JTWC issued the final warning about the storm. At the same time, the RSMC La Réunion reported that the storm had weakened further into a tropical depression. In the early hours of November 26th, the RSMC La Réunion published the last warning about the system, as it had degenerated into a residual low.

Intense tropical cyclone Claudia

Intense Tropical Cyclone ( MFR )
Category 4 cyclone
Claudia Dec 10 2012 0845Z.jpg Claudia 2012 track.png
Duration December 6th - December 13th
intensity 90 kn (165 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 950 hPa

On November 29, the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) began monitoring a tropical system that was under its Australian responsibility. It was moving southwest and was able to develop slowly for the following week due to weak wind shear. On December 6th, this had organized itself so that the JTWC published a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert and the RSMC La Réunion updated it to a tropical disturbance, which was given the designation 04R . At the time of the update, the fault was located 900 km southeast of Diego Garcia . The following day, the disorder, now a Tropical Depression, was classified as a Moderate Tropical Storm by RSMC La Réunion, which was named Claudia .

Tropical cyclone Dumile

Tropical cyclone ( MFR )
Category 1 cyclone
Dumile Jan 3 2013 0650Z.jpg Dumile 2012 track.png
Duration December 29th - January 5th
intensity 70 kn (130 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 968 hPa

On December 28th, a depression just west of an anticyclone continued organizing and showed a significant increase in convection. The following day, RSMC La Réunion updated it to a tropical disorder and was given the designation 05R . At that time, the center was around 1500 km northeast of La Réunion . By the turn of the year, the disturbance moved westward with slow reinforcement. On January 1, it was upgraded to a Moderate Tropical Storm and was therefore named Dumile . The following night, the storm changed course south as forecast and continued to intensify. On January 2 at 10 a.m. (local time), the prefect of La Réunion triggered the orange warning level, which means that the population has to be prepared for a cyclical alarm within the next 24 hours. The red alert, which includes a complete ban on going out, finally applied on January 3rd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. At this point in time, the storm reached wind speeds of 130 km / h for 10 minutes, so it was classified as a Category 1 cyclone. It reached its closest approach to inhabited area at this strength at 1 p.m. local time, when it passed the west coast of the island 95 km away in a southerly direction. Squalls with peaks of 175 km / h, high surf and amounts of rain of up to 659 mm within 24 hours led to considerable damage to the technical infrastructure . Within 48 hours, 1187 mm of precipitation was recorded at the Cratère Commerson, and at least 793 mm at the Cirque de Salazie. The highest waves on the Pointe du Gouffre reached 11 m.
In the days that followed, the storm withdrew rapidly towards the south-east, and from January 5th was already considered an extra-tropical low-pressure area.

Moderate tropical storm Emang

Moderate tropical storm ( MFR )
Tropical storm
Emang January 13 2013.jpg Receipt 2013 track.png
Duration January 12th - January 17th
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 996 hPa

Beginning December 29, the JTWC began observing a fault zone that had formed approximately half a mile northwest of Learmonth, Australia . This then slowly moved westwards and thus into the observation area of the RSMC La Réunion. This updated the zone on January 12 to Tropical Fault 06R . On January 13th, the wind speed reached 35 knots, so the disturbance was upgraded to a moderate tropical storm and was named Emang . Emang was at this point about 1100 km southeast of Diego Garcia . Contrary to the predictions of the RSMC La Réunion, the system weakened again to a tropical disturbance in the following 24 hours. On January 17, it degenerated to a residual low, so that the warning centers published their last warnings on that day.

Intense tropical cyclone Felleng

Intense Tropical Cyclone ( MFR )
Category 4 cyclone
Felleng Jan 29 2013 1015Z.jpg Felleng 2013 track.png
Duration January 26th - February 3rd
intensity 90 kn (165 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 950 hPa

On January 26th, the RSMC La Réunion reported the formation of the Tropical Depression 07R . At the time, this was around 1500 km northeast of La Réunion. A tropical cyclone warning was also issued at JTWC Pearl Harbor. On the morning of January 28, the wind speed reached 35 knots, so that the tropical depression was upgraded to a moderate tropical storm and was named Felleng . As early as 10 p.m. local time, the 10-minute wind speed reached 50 knots, so Felleng was updated to a severe tropical storm. The next morning at 10 a.m. it reached cyclonic strength, its center was around 800 km north of La Réunion. The forecasts anticipated further reinforcement and a railway line along the east coast of Madagascar to the south. On January 29th at 7 p.m. the pre-alarm level yellow was triggered for Réunion. Over the course of the following night, Felleng intensified further and became an Intense Tropical Cyclone in the morning. On the evening of January 30, the RSMC noted a slight weakening for the first time, and by the next morning Felleng was only considered a tropical cyclone. On the morning of February 1, it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm. In the evening, the yellow warning level was lifted again in Réunion, even if the retreating storm briefly intensified to cyclone level. The last bulletin of the RSMC followed on February 3, after Felleng had exceeded the 30th parallel south and regressed to an extra-tropical low pressure area.
The effects of the storm were mainly felt on the east coast of Madagascar. 9 fatalities were also reported there. On Réunion, abundant rainfall and, above all, the strong surf on the coast caused some disruption to road traffic and occasionally to the drinking water supply.

Tropical cyclone Gino

Duration February 11th - February 15th
intensity 75 kn (140 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 960 hPa

On February 11th, the RSMC La Réunion began observing a disturbance southeast of Diego Garcia and published the first tropical depression bulletin 08R . During the day it intensified into a moderate tropical storm and consequently was named Gino . On February 12, Gino was updated to Severe Tropical Storm by the RSMC, and it hit cyclone strength the following day. On the evening of February 14th, the RSMC downgraded Gino to Severe Tropical Storm again, and on February 15, observation of the depression ceased.
Gino moved over the open sea during its entire lifespan and never threatened inhabited areas.

Tropical cyclone Haruna

Duration February 18 - February 25
intensity 80 kn (150 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 965 hPa

On February 12, an area of convection developed on the coast of Mozambique . Over the next few days, the system made a complete loop over the Mozambique Strait and gradually began to organize itself. Due to the very warm water surface temperatures, it had developed enough to be updated on February 18th by the RSMC La Réunion to a tropical disturbance, which was given the designation 09R . The disruption rapidly intensified and was upgraded to a moderate tropical storm by the early morning of the next day, which was named Haruna .

At least 23 people have died in Madagascar as a result of the effects of Haruna and 16 are still missing.

Tropical cyclone Imelda

Storm names

Tropical cyclones are given a name in this basin, provided they reach at least the strength of a moderate tropical storm. When a system reaches this strength west of 55 ° east longitude, the name is assigned by the Sub-Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Madagascar ; If the storm reaches this strength between 55 ° and 90 ° east longitude, the Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Mauritius is responsible for the naming. New lists of names are issued every year, so no names are removed from the list of tropical cyclone names. The list of names for the cyclone season in the Southwest Indicator 2012-2013 was announced by Météo-France in August 2009.
