The cyclone season in the South West Indies 2008–2009 officially started on November 15, 2008 and ended on April 30, 2009 , with the exception of Mauritius and the Seychelles , where it only ended on May 15, 2009. These dates conventionally limit the time of the southern hemisphere meteorological year when most tropical cyclones form in the southwest Indian Ocean . The tropical cyclones in this basin are monitored by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) in Reunion Island , France . Météo-France's area of responsibility includes the Indian Ocean south of the equator and west of 90 ° east longitude . Tropical cyclones in this basin are called cyclones.

Asma October 19 0605 UTC.jpg Asma 2008 track.png
Duration October 16 - October 23
intensity 45 kn (85 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 988 hPa

On October 16, the RSMC La Réunion classified a low pressure area northwest of Diego Garcia as Tropical Disturbance 02. On the morning of October 17, the disturbance intensified into a tropical low pressure area moving in a south-westerly direction. The next morning, Météo-France downgraded the system to a malfunction because the almost strong winds had moved a few hundred kilometers from the storm center. A decrease in vertical wind shear and a relocation of the storm center prompted the RSMC to increase the intensity again on October 19. During the day, the RSMC La Réunion upgraded the system to a moderate tropical storm, and the Sub-Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Mauritius assigned the name Asma to the second tropical system of the season.

Moderate Tropical Storm Bernard

Bernard 19 nov 2008 0520Z.jpg Bernard 2008 track.png
Duration November 19 - November 21
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 995 hPa

From November 15, a low pressure area formed, which on November 19, east-southeast of Diego Garcia, was organized to such an extent that it was classified by the RSMC La Reunion as the third tropical low pressure system of the cyclone year 2008/2009. The system moved eastward and intensified during the day from tropical disturbance to tropical depression and on November 20 to moderate tropical storm Bernard. Six hours later, the RSMC downgraded the intensity to tropical depression. This moved further east and on November 21st came under the responsibility of the TCWC in Perth , Western Australia, where it disbanded a day later.

Severe tropical storm Cinda

Severe Tropical Storm ( MFR )

Duration December 15 - December 21
intensity 50 kn (95 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 985 hPa

On the evening of December 16, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert for a rapidly organizing disruption west of Diego Garcia. The center performed better and better near the ground and attracted sufficient convection that the RSMC La Reunion classified the system as a tropical depression. The wind shear was low and the discharge at high altitude favorable for further development, so that the system was upgraded to moderate tropical storm Cinda in the early part of December 18. Moving away from Diego Garcia in a south-southwest direction, Cinda intensified into a severe tropical storm, but weakened again during the course of the day. Increasing wind shear ensured that the eye was north of the convection. On the morning of December 21st, due to the strong wind shear, Cinda degenerated to a residual depth about 400 km off the coast of Madagascar.

Heavy Tropical Storm Dongo

Severe Tropical Storm ( MFR )

Duration January 8th - January 12th
intensity 50 kn (95 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 984 hPa

The RSMC tracked the residual depth of Tropical Cyclone Billy , which formed in the Australian region in December 2008 when it entered the southwestern Indian Ocean in early January. On January 8, 2009, a new tropical system formed north of the remains of the former tropical cyclone, which had organized itself to the extent that it had to be classified as a tropical disturbance in the late morning. On January 9th, the low pressure area had intensified into a tropical storm and was named Dongo. Dongo intensified further and reached its greatest intensity on January 11th as a severe tropical storm with sustained winds of 50 knots and a central air pressure of 984 hPa . The cyclone followed a south-southeast direction and became extra-tropical on January 12th. The system completely dissolved the following day.

Moderate Tropical Storm Eric

Duration January 17th - January 21st
intensity 45 kn (85 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 991 hPa

On January 17, Météo-France identified a weather disturbance northeast of La Reunion in Reunion, which was much better organized and was classified as a tropical disturbance system on January 18 west-northwest of Madagascar and intensified into a moderate tropical storm on January 19 .

Intense tropical cyclone Fanele

Duration January 18 - January 23
intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 930 hPa

On January 17, the JTWC pointed to a tropical low off the coast of Madagascar near Antananarivo in the Mozambique Strait . The system showed signs of rapid development of depth near the ground, and the presence of an anti-cyclone at altitude created favorable conditions. The next day, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert and shortly thereafter the RSMC classified La Reunion as Tropical Disturbance 07. Six hours later, the RSMC upgraded the system to a Tropical Depression. The next day, the system intensified first to a moderate and then during the day to a severe tropical storm.

Fanele intensified into an Intense Tropical Cyclone with winds of 100 knots on the morning of January 20th. Between 0:00 and 2:00 UTC on January 21, the cyclone crossed the coastline of Madagascar. The cyclone lost power over land. By the early morning of January 22nd, Fanele had turned to depression. The system then came back over the waters of the Indian Ocean, where Fanele was able to intensify again into a moderate tropical storm before it turned into an extra-tropical storm. The effects of the cyclone killed nine people and left at least 20,000 homeless.

Intense tropical cyclone Gael

Intense Tropical Cyclone ( MFR )
Category 4 cyclone

Duration February 1st - February 10th
intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 930 hPa

On February 1, the RSMC La Réunion classified a system a few hundred kilometers south of Diego Garcia as a tropical disturbance and upgraded the system to Tropical Weather Disturbance 08 a few hours later. The system moved steadily westward and continued to intensify. On February 3, Metéo-France discovered that the Moderate Tropical Storm Gael had formed. In the afternoon of the same day, the French weather service for the islands around Réunion issued a “yellow” alarm and on February 4, the Mauritius weather service announced its warning level II, as Gael was approaching the island from the northeast. Early on February 5th, the RSMC upgraded Gael to a severe tropical storm.

Gael maintained this strength for the next two days before the storm weakened into a severe tropical storm. The storm swung east of Madagascar to a southerly direction and later more to the southeast. On February 10, Gael entered a cold core system over the Southern Ocean and the RSMC suspended its warnings.

Severe tropical storm Hina

Severe Tropical Storm ( MFR )
Category 1 cyclone

Duration February 20 - February 24
intensity 55 kn (100 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 976 hPa

A tropical weather disturbance formed southeast of Diego Garcia on February 20, which intensified, so that the JTWC triggered a Tropical Cyclone Forming Alert the next day . The RSMC La Reunion upgraded the system to a moderate tropical storm the next day and named it Hina ; the name of the JTWC for the system is 16S . During the day, Hina built a well-defined organization and formed band structures. On February 22nd, Hina had intensified into a severe tropical storm. The storm hit a generally southern pulling direction and stayed far from land. Late on February 25, the cyclone weakened and later turned into a tropical disturbance as wind shear cleared the convection from the center.

Tropical Depression 10

Tropical Depression ( MFR )
Tropical storm
Tropical Depression 10 SWpac 2009-03-09.jpg 19-S 2009 track.png
Duration March 6th - March 10th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 997 hPa

On March 6, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center began observing a low pressure area (JTWC designation 19S ), which intensified into a tropical depression on March 9. However, the system did not develop further and due to strong wind shear in the early morning of March 10th, it broke up without developing into a tropical cyclone. It was the first tropical depression in the area of responsibility of Metéo-France that has not been able to intensify into a tropical storm since the formation of the first tropical system on October 6th.

Severe tropical storm Izilda

Category 1 cyclone
Izilda 25 March 2009 at 0715 UTC.jpg Izilda 2009 track.png
Duration March 24th - March 27th
intensity 60 kn (110 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 978 hPa

A tropical disturbance formed in the Strait of Mozambique around March 21st, which the JTWC classified as Tropical Cyclone 24S on March 24th . The system drifted very slowly south and south-west. Around noon on March 25, Météo-France classified Izilda as a severe tropical cyclone, which reached its greatest intensity with ten-minute winds of 60 knots . Izilda maintained this strength throughout the day, due to interactions from the island of Madagascar and wind shear, Izilda disintegrated on March 27th.

On the approach to the Malagasy coast, storm warnings were issued for the areas between Morondava and Toliara and local fishermen were told not to leave the port due to strong waves. Authorities feared that the situation would worsen for around 4,000 residents left homeless by previous floods on the island . Izilda passed the island of Europe as a tropical depression ; no damage was reported from there. Izilda brought moderate rainfall to parts of southwest Madagascar and the island of Europe. Waves up to 8 m high reached the coastlines of Mozambique and Madagascar when Izilda was almost stationary on March 25th.

Heavy Tropical Storm Jade

Severe Tropical Storm ( MFR )
Category 1 cyclone
Cyclone Jade at second landfall.jpg Jade 2009 track.png
Duration April 4th - April 11th
intensity 60 kn (110 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 975 hPa

On April 4, northeast of La Reunion, the twelfth tropical weather disturbance of the cyclone season 2008-2009 in the southwestern Indian formed, which was upgraded by the RSMC La Reunion early on April 5 to a tropical low pressure area and in the same afternoon to a moderate tropical cyclone named Jade . The system moved in a south-westerly direction. In the evening hours of April 5, Jade reached the strength of a severe tropical storm, which after landfall near Antalaha in Madagascar between 6:00 and 8:00 UTC on April 6, initially weakened to a moderate tropical cyclone and finally to a tropical depression over land. On April 7th, the system surfaced again in southeast Madagascar and re-intensified into a moderate tropical cyclone. On April 8, the RSMC lowered the intensity of the now south-east moving system.

Heavy rainfall from the cyclone caused a house to collapse in the north of the island, killing three people. Five people lost their lives in the southeast of the country. In total, Jade killed 15 people on the island and made 22,900 homeless.

Time overview of the season

Storm names

Tropical cyclones are given a name in this basin, provided they are at least as strong as a moderate tropical storm. When a system reaches this strength west of 55 ° east longitude, the name is assigned by the Sub-Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Madagascar ; If the storm reaches this strength between 55 ° and 90 ° east longitude, the Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Mauritius is responsible for the naming. New lists of names are issued every year, so no names are removed from the list of tropical cyclone names. The list of names for the cyclone season in the Southwest Indicator 2008-2009 was announced by Météo-France on August 20.
