The cyclone season in the Southwest Indicator 2010–2011 officially began on November 15, 2010 and ended on April 30, 2011, with the exception of Mauritius and the Seychelles , where it did not end until May 15, 2011. These dates conventionally limit the time of the meteorological year of the southern hemisphere during which most tropical cyclones form in the southwestern Ind . However, the first tropical system formed on October 25, 2010.

The tropical cyclones in this basin are monitored by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) in Reunion Island , France . Météo-France's area of responsibility includes the Indian Ocean south of the equator and west of 90 ° east longitude . Tropical cyclones in this area are called cyclones. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Honolulu also monitors the weather in this sea area; it issues storm warnings primarily aimed at United States Armed Forces facilities in the Indian Ocean.

Storms

Tropical Depression 01

Tropical Depression ( MFR )
Tropical storm

Duration October 25th - October 29th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 997 hPa

On October 25 at 12:00 UTC , Météo-France determined that a tropical fault had formed in the southwestern Indic. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) identified the tropical disturbance as a low pressure area around 800 nautical miles east of Diego Garcia on the same day . The system moved in a south-easterly and then south-westerly direction and was upgraded to the Tropical Depression twelve hours later. A few hours later, the JTWC directly classified the system as a tropical storm. The next day, Météo-France reported a slight weakening of the system. A few hours later, in Le Reunion, Météo-France downgraded the system to a tropical disruption due to further weakening. Later that day, the JTWC also noted that the storm was weakening into a weak tropical depression and issued its final warning.

Tropical cyclone Abele (02U)

Tropical cyclone ( MFR )
Category 1 cyclone

Duration November 29th - December 3rd ( outside the pool )
intensity 70 kn (130 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 973 hPa

On November 29, both the TCWC in Perth and Météo-France reported the formation of Tropical Fault 02 in the southwest Indian Ocean, not far from the area of responsibility of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology , which is why the TCWC in Perth classified the system as 02U . The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) also classified the system as tropical and marked it as 03S when it was located around 1,300 km west of the Cocos Islands . On November 30, Météo-France upgraded the disorder to a tropical depression. On December 1, the system intensified for the first tropical storm of the season and was named Abele by the Mauritius Meteorological Service . On the same day, Météo-France upgraded Abele to a severe tropical storm. The system intensified further and reached the strength of a tropical cyclone on December 2nd. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center classified Abele as a Category 1 cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale . On December 3, the JTWC found that Abele had crossed the 90th east longitude on his southeastern course. Thus Abele became part of the Australian cyclone season 2010-2011 .

Tropical Depression 03

Tropical Depression ( MFR )
03R 2 January 2011.jpg 03R 2010 track.png
Duration January 2nd - January 17th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 996 hPa

On December 28th, a low pressure area developed near Indonesia . On January 2, 2011, Météo-France (MFR) announced that Tropical Fault 03 had formed in the southwestern Indic . The system intensified, so a few hours later Météo-France classified the system as a tropical depression. Early on January 3, the RSMC found the system was starting to weaken and downgraded it to a tropical disorder. A few hours later, the RSMC issued the final warning on the system. The remaining low moved on an erratic course in a west-southwest direction across the Indian Ocean. On January 15th, the system had regenerated to the point that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center triggered a Tropical Cyclone Forming Alert. Due to moderate to strong wind shear, the RSMC did not initially assume that the remaining low would intensify into a tropical depression before the landfall in Madagascar, but on January 16 it felt compelled to classify the system again as a tropical depression. However, because the system was actually drifting into the country and quickly weakening after the landfall at Fenoarivo , the JTWC canceled its TCFA issued the day before. By January 17th, the system had completely disintegrated.

Tropical disturbance 04

Tropical disturbance ( MFR )

Duration January 30th - January 31st
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 998 hPa

On January 30th, Météo-France classified a low pressure area south of La Réunion as tropical fault 04 . The system moved south and the next day it had lost its tropical characteristics, so Météo-France issued the final warning about the system.

Intense tropical cyclone Bingiza

Intense Tropical Cyclone ( MFR )
Category 3 cyclone
Bingiza 13 February 2011.jpg Bingiza 2011 track.png
Duration February 9th - February 18th
intensity 90 kn (165 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 953 hPa

Early on February 9th, Météo-France classified a low pressure area as Tropical Fault 05 . The system was at the time 260 km north-northeast of Tromelin . The system intensified a few hours later into a tropical depression and, after further rapid intensification, into a moderate tropical storm called Bingiza on the same day . A little later, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center classified the system as Tropical Cyclone 13S . However, central atmospheric pressure began to rise on February 11th and the system weakened as a result. The next day, however, the conditions became very favorable for rapid intensification because there was no wind shear at high altitude and there was a very good divergence of the cirrus clouds . The near-stationary system began to intensify again, becoming a severe tropical storm and soon afterwards a tropical cyclone that eventually evolved into an intense tropical cyclone. By interacting with Madagascar's landmass, Bingiza weakened to a tropical cyclone late on February 13th. After the landfall of Bingiza over Saranambana early on February 14th, the cyclone weakened rapidly. The system was therefore downgraded by Météo-France to Depression over land. The depression moved slowly across Madagascar and entered the Mozambique Strait as a tropical disturbance on February 16 . Above water, the system intensified again to a tropical depression. Bingaza briefly achieved the status of a moderate tropical storm again, but after a change of direction it came over land again. The system lost power very quickly over the south of the island and finally disintegrated on February 20th in the southern Indian Ocean.

As it approached Madagascar, Bingiza led to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, which caused local flooding.

Tropical disturbance 06

Tropical disturbance ( MFR )
Temporary cyclone south.svg 06R 2011 track.png
Duration February 15 - February 20
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 1000 hPa

On February 15, Météo-France classified a low pressure area northeast of La Réunion as Tropical Fault '06'. Due to moderate wind shear, the system weakened the next day. It completely dissolved on February 20th.

Moderate Tropical Storm Cherono

Moderate tropical storm ( MFR )
Tropical storm
Cherono Mar 17 2011.jpg Cherono 2011 track.png
Duration March 14th (from the Australian region ) - March 23rd
intensity 40 kn (75 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 995 hPa

On March 14th, the tropical low 23U from the Australian region entered the Southwest Indies, where it was classified as Tropical Fault 07. It intensified rapidly and was upgraded the next day from a tropical depression to a moderate tropical storm called Cherono . On March 19, the storm was found to be easing. On March 21st, the transition into a subtropical depression began. On March 23, Cherono broke up.

Tropical disturbance 08

Tropical disturbance ( MFR )
Temporary cyclone south.svg 08R 2011 track.png
Duration March 29th - April 1st
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 1004 hPa

On March 28, an area of disturbed weather moved to the southwestern Indian Ocean. It was classified as Tropical Fault 08 a day later. Météo-France expected the system to intensify into a moderate tropical storm during the first few days of April, but wind shear prevented intensification and the system disintegrated on April 1st.

Subtropical Depression 09

Subtropical Depression ( MFR )
Temporary cyclone south.svg 09R 2011 track.png
Duration April 13th - April 16th
intensity 50 kn (95 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 985 hPa

On April 13, a subtropical depression formed south of Madagascar . Although the system reached wind speeds of a severe tropical storm, it retained its subtropical properties, so it was not given a name. It broke up on April 16 without endangering any land.

Storm names

Tropical cyclones are given a name in this basin, provided they are at least as strong as a moderate tropical storm. When a system reaches this strength west of 55 ° east longitude, the name is assigned by the Sub-Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Madagascar ; If the storm reaches this strength between 55 ° and 90 ° east longitude, the Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Center in Mauritius is responsible for the naming. New lists of names are issued every year, so no names are removed from the list of tropical cyclone names. The list of names for the cyclone season in the South West Indies 2009-2010 was announced by Météo-France in August 2009.
