North Indian cyclone seasons
2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013

The cyclone season in the North Indies 2011 has no official limits, as is usual in other basins, but runs all year round. The tropical cyclones usually form in this basin between April and December, with the months before and after the monsoon season , i.e. April / May and October / November, being the most active. A tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean is known as a cyclone .

The responsible Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) is the India Meteorological Department in New Delhi . This gives a name to those tropical cyclones that have at least the status of a cyclone. Low pressure areas (depending on the wind speed depressions or deep depressions ) are numbered consecutively, with the letter combination BOB indicating that the system was formed in the Bay of Bengal . The letters ARB stand for the Arabian Sea .

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Honolulu issues separate warnings and forecasts for the US facilities in the Indian Ocean. The JTWC classifies them according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale . The RSMC uses its own criteria for the classification, which are based, among other things, on the measurement of the continuous wind speed on the basis of a three-minute observation.

Storm names

Tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean are named by the RSMC of the India Meteorological Department . The names are used only once each, so no devastating storm names are removed from the list of tropical cyclone names after the season ends .

Depression BOB 01

Depression ( IMD )
BOB 01 - 2 feb.jpg BOB01 2011 track.png
Duration February 2nd - February 3rd
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 1002 hPa

On February 2, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified a low pressure area about 100 km southeast of Pottuvil , Sri Lanka , as a tropical depression BOB 01 . The convection within the system increased as the system drifted towards land. Early the next day, the IMD downgraded the system to a residual low because the proximity to land caused a weakening.

After severe flooding in Sri Lanka in December 2010 and January 2011, the tropical system brought further extensive rainfall to the island. At least six people were killed by the flooding and another five were missing. More than 250,000 Sri Lankans have been affected by the effects of the system.

Depression ARB 01 (01A)

Duration June 11th - June 12th
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 996 hPa

In early June, a low pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea. This stayed almost stationary and got stronger. On June 11, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified the low pressure area as a tropical depression and gave it the designation ARB 01 . On the same day, the system was classified as Tropical Cyclone 01A by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) . At the time, the center was about 180 km northwest of Mumbai and 150 km southeast of Veraval , Gujarat . On June 12, the system crossed the coast of Saurashtra about 25 km east of Diu . It weakened to a well-marked low pressure area , so the IMD stopped warnings about the system. The JTWC did not issue any further warnings either.

Deep Depression BOB 02

Deep Depression ( IMD )

Duration June 16 - June 23
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 978 hPa

On June 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded an area with a low pressure area at l21 ° 30'N and 89 ° 00'E, about 150 km southeast of Kolkata , to a depression, the second in the 2011 Gulf cyclone season from Bengal ( BOB 02 ).

During the day the system intensified to a deep depression. It moved over the coast of West Bengal , about 100 km east of Sagar Island . On the same day at 7:00 p.m. UTC , the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA). The system continued to drift inland and the next day the JTWC picked up its TCFA. The system weakened to a depression on June 18, overlying Jharkhand .

Duration July 22nd - July 23rd
intensity 20 kn (35 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 990 hPa

When the Madden-Julian Oscillation entered its fifth phase, conditions in the Bay of Bengal became favorable for tropical cyclogenesis . These conditions and a cyclonic vortex in the upper troposphere led to the formation of a low pressure area over West Bengal on July 21, about 50 km southeast of Daltonganj . The next day, IMD reported that the system had evolved into the first tropical depression of the season, which formed over land. The three-minute continuous wind speeds were determined to be 35 km / h. During the course of the day, the system moved northwest under the influence of a monsoon channel and weakened into a low pressure area early on July 23.

The system caused heavy rain in the states of Madhya Pradesh , Rajasthan , Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha , but no damage was reported.

Depression BOB 03

Depression ( IMD )
Depression BOB 03 September 22nd 2011.jpg BOB03 2011 track.png
Duration September 22nd - September 23rd
intensity 25 kn (45 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 995 hPa

Late on September 20, a low pressure area developed about 370 km south of Chittagong , Bangladesh . Under the influence of strong vertical wind shear and monsoon activity in the Bay of Bengal, the system initially failed to strengthen and the JTWC later reported that it had disintegrated. However, on September 22nd, the IMD classified the system as Depression BOB 03 and started issuing storm warnings. Late that day, BOB 03 drifted northwest towards the coast and reached overland at Balasore in the north of the state of Orissa . The depression initially moved further northwest, but then remained more or less stationary over Jharkhand . On the evening of September 23, the IMD stated in its last bulletin on BOB 03 that the depression had weakened into a severe residual low pressure area.

After the landfall, heavy rainfall created a risk of flooding for the second time within two weeks in the catchment area of the Bramhani and Baitarani rivers . On the evening of September 22nd, 90 villages in Jajpur had to be evacuated because the latter was badly swollen.

Duration October 29th - November 4th
intensity 35 kn (65 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 996 hPa

Under the influence of a low pressure trough about one thousand kilometers east of Mogadishu , a low pressure area developed at the end of October, which intensified and was classified as Depression ARB 02 by the RSMC in New Delhi on October 29 . The system initially migrated westwards towards the Gulf of Aden , but temporarily embarked on an almost north-northwestern trajectory on October 30, until it returned to a westerly direction on the afternoon of October 31. On November 1st, the system intensified into a deep depression and a day later into a cyclonic storm. This was named Keila by the RSMC in New Delhi . Initially, a landfall was predicted on the border between Yemen and Oman , but the storm moved very slowly and then moved north.

The storm crossed the coast not far from Salalah , and in the evening the RSMC downgraded Keila to a Deep Depression. A day later, the meandering system in the coastal area weakened to a depression and then a low pressure area, so that the IMD issued its last warning about ex-Keila.

Heavy rain caused flash floods in Oman , killing at least 14 people and injuring 200 others. Floods made it necessary to evacuate a hospital in the Omani capital of Muscat on November 3rd.

Deep Depression ARB 03 (04A)
