Medininagar , also Daltonganj , is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The city is the capital of the Palamu district . Medininagar is managed as a municipal corporation . The city is divided into 26 wards (constituencies).

history

The city was named Daltonganj during British rule after Colonel Edward Tuite Dalton (1815–1880), an anthropologist and Chota Nagpur Division official in 1861. The name was changed after it became a municipal corporation in April 2018 . Today the Medininagar is called Raja Medini Ray after the ruler of the Chero dynasty .

Demographics

The city's population is 78,396 according to the 2011 census. Medininagar has a gender ratio of 892 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 87.9% in 2011. Almost 77% of the population are Hindus , around 20% are Muslims , around 1% are Christians and around 2% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 11.9% of the population.

Since 2009, the city has had a state university with the Nilamber-Pitamber University.
