Palamu is a district in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The area is 4393 km². The administrative seat is the city of Medininagar (formerly Daltonganj).

The population was 1,939,869 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.17% and was therefore very high. Palamu has a gender ratio of 928 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 63.63% in 2011 , an increase of almost 2 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is below the national average. Almost 86.8% of the population are Hindus , approx. 12.3% are Muslims , approx. 0.3% are Christians and approx. 0.6% did not state any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 17% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
