The area is 1811 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Jamtara .

The population was 791,042 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.12% and was therefore very high. Jamtara has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India.
