Giridih is a district in the Indian state of Jharkhand .
The area is 4962 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Giridih .
history
Before the district was established in December 1972, it was part of Hazaribag District . Today the district belongs to the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

The population was 2,445,474 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.41% and was therefore very high. Giridih has a gender ratio of 944 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 63.14% in 2011 , an increase of almost 19 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 75.9% of the population are Hindus , approx. 20.8% are Muslims , approx. 0.6% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Jainas , and approx. 2.6% did not declare any religion or practice other religions. 18.8% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
Almost 8.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Giridih with 114,533 inhabitants.
