The area is 2266 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Godda .

The population was 1,313,551 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 31.77% and was therefore very high. Godda has a gender ratio of 938 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 56.40% in 2011 , an increase of almost 13 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 71.3% of the population are Hindus , approx. 22.0% are Muslims , approx. 2.9% are Christians and approx. 3.8% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 18.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
The district is rural and only 4.9% of the population live in cities.
economy
The main economic activity of most of the inhabitants is agriculture, mainly rice , wheat and maize are grown . There are also coal deposits in the district .
