Dumka is a district in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The area is 3761 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Dumka .

The population was 1,321,442 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 31.77% and was therefore very high. Dumka has a gender ratio of 977 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 61.02% (women: 48.82%, men: 72.96%), an increase of almost 13 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average . Almost 79.1% of the population are Hindus , approx. 8.1% are Muslims , approx. 6.5% are Christians and approx. 6.3% did not state any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 16.6% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

The district is rural and agricultural and only 6.2% of the population live in cities.
