The area is 4093 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Garhwa .
history
Before the district was founded in 1991, it was part of the Palamu district . The district belongs to the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

The population was 1,322,784 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 27.75% and was therefore very high. Garhwa has a gender ratio of 935 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India.
