Lohardaga is a district in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The area is 1502 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Lohardaga .

Today the district belongs to the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

The population was 461,790 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.68% and was therefore very high. Lohardaga has a gender ratio of 953 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 67.61% in 2011 , an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 24.3% of the population are Hindus , approx. 20.6% are Muslims , approx. 3.6% are Christians and approx. 51.4% did not state any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 18.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 16.8% of the population live in cities.
