Bokaro ( Hindi बोकारो जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The district of Bokaro is located on the Chota-Nagpur plateau east of Ranchi on the border with the neighboring state of West Bengal . The district was established in 1991. A sub-division consisting of two blocks from the Dhanbad district and six blocks from the Giridih district were combined to form the newly established district. The administrative headquarters are in Bokaro Steel City . The district is currently part of the so-called red corridor ( Red Corridor ) carried by the Naxalite-Maoist insurgency is concerned. The district of Bokaro extends over 2883 km².

Residents

Bokaro had about 2 million inhabitants at the 2011 census. The gender ratio was 922 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 72.01% (82.51% for men, 60.63% for women). 79.35% of the population are followers of Hinduism , 11.71% are Muslim .

economy

The Bokaro district is considered to be one of the most industrialized areas in India. Important companies in Bokaro are: Steel Authority of India , Bharat Refractories Ltd , Hindustan Steelworks Construction Ltd and Damodar Valley Corporation, and branches of Coal India Ltd , Electrosteel Castings Ltd , Bokaro Power Supply Company Pvt. Ltd (BPSCL) , Indian Explosive Ltd and Jaypee Group, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation .
