Census town

As a census town ( Engl. For "census town") in are India settlements referred to in the Indian census ( Census of India ) as cities are counted, even though they are the administratively not. To be counted as a census city, a settlement must meet the following criteria:

  • More than 5000 inhabitants.
  • At least 75 percent of the male working population works outside the agricultural sector.
  • The population density exceeds 400 people per square kilometer.

The 2011 Indian census counted 3894 census cities in India. In the previous 2001 census, their number was only 1,362.
