Lohardaga is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand .

The city is the capital of the Lohardaga district of the same name . Lohardaga is administered as a Nagar Parishad . The city is divided into 22 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

The city's population is 57,411 according to the 2011 census. Lohardaga has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 85.4% in 2011. Almost 46% of the population are Hindus , approx. 29% are Muslims , approx. 5% are Christians and approx. 20% belong to another or no religion. 13.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 24.8% of the population are Scheduled Tribes .

Lohardaga is known as the land of the bauxite mines . Several companies, notably Hindalco , operate bauxite mines near Lohardaga. Bauxite, extracted from the mines around Lohardaga, is supplied to alumina refineries in various states of India.
