Giridih ( Hindi : गिरिडीह , Giriḍīh ) is the district capital of the administrative district of the same name in the Indian state of Jharkhand . It has about 114,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

The city is located about 115 kilometers northeast of Hazaribag on the banks of the Usri River . Literally translated Giridih means "in the land of hills and rocks". The name is made up of the Hindi words giri ("hill") and dih (in the local dialect "highlands"). Giridih is located on the edge of some large coal fields, and it is also one of the main trading types of mica . Decades of clear cutting of the former surrounding forests have resulted in the city making a dusty and desolate impression today.

history

Carved facades and pathetic remains of splendid houses suggest that the better days in Giridih are long gone.

With the connection to the railway network of the Eastern Railway in 1871, the importance of the small town rose by leaps and bounds. The single-track route , which was used by the colonial rulers primarily with the aim of transporting the region's rich coal deposits from Madhupur to the east, served until the first decades of the 20th century, but also served Bengal as an opportunity to retreat to the cooler regions in the summer months can. Numerous, meanwhile dilapidated, magnificent buildings in the city bear witness to this era. Since the overexploitation of mineral resources and in particular the clearing of the forests, large areas of the district have consisted of karst soils that seem desert-like and unreal.

The physicist and botanist Jagadish Chandra Bose spent the last days of his life in Giridih, which is why the Sir JC Bose Girl's High School was named after him in his honor.
