Nikolaus Elgard

Nikolaus Elgard , also Elchard , Elchrod , Elschreid or Elgardus (* around 1547 in Elcherait near Arlon , Belgium ; † August 11, 1587 in Erfurt ) was an auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Church .

Life

He studied philosophy in Leuven and Trier , where he was ordained a priest , and continued his studies in Rome at the Collegium Germanicum in 1569 . There he received his doctorate in theology . 1572 Bishop commissioned him Otto Truchsess von Waldburg with the visitation of the diocese of Augsburg . In 1573 he became a canon in Augsburg . In the dispute over the Augustinian monastery in Augsburg, he was sent to Rome together with Nuncio Kaspar Gropper , who commissioned him in 1574 to visit Eichsfeld , Fulda and Franconia . In 1575 he received a papal commission and also visited Westphalia , Cologne , Kleve and Trier.

In 1576 he visited on behalf of Pope Gregory XIII. together with Giovanni Morone the Diet of Regensburg .

At his suggestion, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Mainz and consecrated on February 2, 1578 by Bishop Daniel Brendel von Homburg . He resided in Erfurt, which at that time belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz and was the leading figure in the Counter Reformation there .
