Daniel Brendel von Homburg (born March 22, 1523 in Aschaffenburg ; † March 22, 1582 ibid) from the Brendel von Homburg family was elector and archbishop of Mainz from 1555 .

Life

He was the son of Friedrich Brendel von Homburg, Kurmainzer Vizedom in Aschaffenburg, and his wife Margaretha nee. Riedesel von Bellersheim and entered the clergy. As the Speyer canon and cathedral scholaster , he also became cathedral capitular in Mainz in 1548 .

On April 22, 1555 he was elected Archbishop of Mainz, where he got only one vote more than his rival, Count Palatine Reichard, who was more Lutheran . He received his episcopal ordination at Pentecost 1557 in Aschaffenburg by the Speyer bishop Rudolf von und zu Frankenstein , who had also campaigned strongly for his election.

He died in 1582 and was buried in Mainz Cathedral .

His nephew (son of his sister) Johann Adam von Bicken († 1604) continued his work as Archbishop of Mainz in the spirit of his uncle.

The later Bishop of Worms Johann Karl von und zu Franckenstein (1610-1691) was his great-nephew (grandson of his brother).

Act

His work as senior shepherd is closely linked to the history of the University of Mainz , because in 1561 he founded the College of Jesuits in Mainz , which was officially recognized as part of the university as early as 1568 with several hundred members. The first rector was Father Lambert Auer , whom the archbishop also valued as an advisor. In 1570 the St. Gangolf Abbey became the property of the Archbishop, who had it expanded from 1575 to 1581 by the Mainz cathedral builder Georg Robin in the Renaissance style to create the castle chapel of the Martinsburg fortress built from 1478 to 1481 . The Jesuits then took over almost all chairs in the theological and philosophical faculties. Another college that can refer to its founding spirit is Heiligenstadt im Eichsfeld . This foundation took place in 1575. It must be seen as part of the Counter Reformation and shows Brendel's respect for the decrees of the Tridentine .

The elector had a very secular effect, especially through the purchase of the Spessart County Rieneck with Lohr and the Taunus County Eppstein - Königstein for the Electoral State of Mainz. He was particularly taken with the restoration of old walls, some examples are:

all of which had fallen victim to the turmoil of the peasant wars .

He was instrumental in the creation and course of the Frankfurt Electoral Congress of 1558. There, the transition from the resigned Emperor Charles V to Ferdinand I was confirmed under imperial law and the Kurvereinsought was renewed .
