Princess Astrid Joséphine-Charlotte Fabrizia Elisabeth Paola Maria of Belgium (born June 5, 1962 in Brussels , Belgium ) is the daughter of the Belgian King Albert II and his wife Paola Ruffo di Calabria and the sister of the reigning King Philippe . She currently ranks fifth in line to the Belgian throne .
Life

Astrid was born on June 5, 1962 in Brussels as the second child of Prince Albert and his wife Paola. Her full name is Astrid Joséphine-Charlotte Fabrizia Elisabeth Paola Maria . Fabrizio Ruffo di Calabria and her aunt Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg took over the sponsorship .
Astrid attended a grammar school in Brussels. She then studied art history for a year at the University of Leiden . She completed her training at the Institut d'Etudes Européennes in Geneva and Michigan ( USA ).

Marriage and children
Princess Astrid married Lorenz Habsburg-Lothringen , Archduke of Austria-Este , on September 22nd, 1984 . The prince couple has five children:
- Prince Amedeo Maria Joseph Carl Pierre Philippe Paola Marcus d'Aviano of Belgium, Archduke of Austria-Este, Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia (born February 21, 1986 in Brussels). The prince was baptized a Catholic. His godparents are his uncle King Philippe and his grandmother Paola. Amedeo attended the Jesuit school Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege in Brussels and the English boarding school Sevenoaks School . After graduating from school in 2004, he was trained as an officer at the Royal Military School. From 2005 to 2008 he studied economics and political science at the London School of Economics . He currently lives and works in New York. He is married to the Italian noblewoman Elisabetta Maria Rosboch von Wolkenstein. The wedding took place on July 5, 2014 in Rome in the Basilica Santa Maria in Trastevere . The couple had their first child, daughter Anna-Astrid , on May 17, 2016 . Maximilian was born on September 6, 2019 .
- Princess Maria Laura Zita Beatrix Gerhard of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este, Royal Princess of Hungary and Bohemia (born August 26, 1988 in Brussels). Her godparents are Archduke Gerhard of Austria-Este and Archduchess Maria Beatrix of Austria-Este, both of whom are siblings of her father. The princess attended the Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege in Brussels and the St. John International School in Waterloo. She studied Sinology at SOAS in London and spent a year abroad in the People's Republic of China . In 2008 she enrolled at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales .
- Prince Joachim Carl Maria Nikolaus Isabelle Marcus d'Aviano of Belgium, Archduke of Austria-Este, Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia (born December 9, 1991 in Brussels). Joachim's godparents are Nikolaus von Liechtenstein and Archduchess Isabelle von Österreich-Este. He attended the Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege , the Dutch-language school Wemelweide and the English boarding school Malvern College .
- Princess Luisa Maria Anna Martine Pilar of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este, Royal Princess of Hungary and Bohemia (born October 11, 1995 in Brussels). Her godparents are Archduke Martin of Austria-Este and Pilar Escriva de Romani, the niece of her great-aunt Queen Fabiola of Belgium . She also attended the Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege and switched to the Sevenoaks School in Kent in 2009 .
- Princess Laetitia Maria Nora Anna Joachim Zita of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este, Royal Princess of Hungary and Bohemia (born April 23, 2003 in Brussels). Laetitia Maria was baptized a Catholic like her siblings. Her godparents are her brother Joachim and Princess Nora Elisabeth von Liechtenstein. Since 2006 she has also attended the Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege .
From 1984 to 1993 the princess lived with her family in Basel because her husband worked there.
Official duties
Princess Astrid has been a member of the armed forces since 1997 and holds the rank of colonel in the medical corps. In addition, she has been President of the Belgian Red Cross since 1994, as well as Honorary Chairman of the Fondation Médicale Reine Elisabeth and the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Diseases .
The princess also makes state visits, sometimes accompanied by her husband. In 2008 she visited Zambia to support a malaria relief project called Roll Back Malaria .
