Princess Claire of Belgium , b. Claire Louise Coombs (born January 18, 1974 in Bath , England ) is Princess of Belgium and the wife of Prince Laurent of Belgium .

Life

Claire Louise Coombs was born in England in 1974. Her family moved to Wavre when she was four years old. Her father Nicholas John Coombs (* 1938 in Wimbledon ) runs the family business. Her mother Nicole Eva Gabrielle Thérèse Mertens (* 1951 in Ixelles ) was a secretary and later also worked in the family business. The parents live in Chaumont-Gistoux . Princess Claire has an older sister Joanna (* 1972) and a younger brother Matthew (* 1976). The paternal grandparents live in England, the maternal family comes from Belgium.

Claire went to school at the Institut de la Providence in Wavre. As a child she was interested in drawing, painting and music. She was a member of a boy scout group, sang in a choir and had riding lessons. After graduating from high school, she completed an apprenticeship as a surveyor. Since 1999 she has had the title of "land surveyor real estate expert". She later became a partner in the Brone & Oldenhove surveyor's office .

Claire Coombs has both Belgian and British citizenship.

In addition to her native French, she also speaks English and Dutch . It has been criticized that her Dutch is not correct, even though Belgium is trilingual.

The princess performs representative tasks. She is always present at royal family events and attends state visits. In 2007 she opened the congress of the International Society for Twin Studies .

On April 12, 2003, she married Prince Laurent Benoît Baudouin Marie of Belgium in Brussels . By royal decree of April 1, 2003, Claire Coombs was bestowed the title "Princess of Belgium" on the day of her marriage.

The couple has three children:
