Lorenz Archduke of Austria-Este

Lorenz Habsburg-Lothringen (born December 16, 1955 in Boulogne-Billancourt , France ) is a banker and has been Prince of Belgium since 1995 . He comes from the Austria-Este sideline of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen . His wife, Princess Astrid of Belgium, is King Philippe's sister .

origin

Lorenz is the son of Robert von Österreich-Este (1915–1996) and Margherita von Savoyen-Aosta (* 1930), the daughter of Amadeus, 3rd Duke of Aosta and Anne Hélène Marie d'Orléans.

On his father's side, he is a grandson of the last Austrian Emperor and King of Hungary Karl I (1887–1922) and his wife Princess Zita von Bourbon-Parma (1892–1989).

Lorenz spent his childhood in France. After graduating from high school there, he completed his military service in Austria and then studied at the universities of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ) and Innsbruck (Austria), where he obtained a diploma in economics and social sciences.

The prince's professional activities are mainly in the banking sector. From 1983 he worked as a manager at the bank E. Gutzwiller & Cie. Banquiers in Basel , where he became a managing partner in 1990. During this time his family also lived in Basel. Since 1993 he has lived with the family in Brussels. In 1993 he was a consultant at SWIFT and from 1995 he was a consultant to the board of BNP Paribas in Paris. Until 2003 he was a board member in numerous companies, including subsidiaries of the Suez Group such as SITA (a subsidiary is Sita Germany ) and Ondeo - Nalco (sold by the Suez Group in 2003). In 2007 he was re-elected as an independent director and member of the board of directors of UCB SA . In addition, he is still one of four partners with unlimited liability at E. Gutzwiller & Cie. Bankers . and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the subsidiary Gutzwiller Fonds Management AG , which is active in the distribution and sale of investment funds .

Although he continues to work full-time, he represents the royal family and the like. a. at celebrations and accompanies his wife on official engagements abroad. Since 2004 he has been honorary president of the "Royal Association of Historic Buildings in Belgium" ( Koninklijke Vereniging der Historische Woonsteden van België / Association Royale des Demeures Historiques de Belgique ). Since 2005 he has been the patron of Europae Thesauri , an association of ecclesiastical museums and treasuries.

Habsburg-Lothringen is an Austrian citizen and Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece . In 1996, after the death of his father, he took over the title of “Duke of Modena and Reggio” and thus became head of the Austrian-Este family within the family . Since titles of nobility have been abolished in Austria, he only bears the Habsburg titles in his capacity as a Belgian, and as an Austrian, his real name.

Marriage and offspring

On September 22, 1984, he married the Belgian Princess Astrid (* 1962), daughter of King Albert II of Belgium (* 1934) and his wife, Paola Ruffo di Calabria (* 1937) in Brussels .

The marriage had five children:
